A pop culture look at the purpose of faith

I've created this thread because I'm curious to hear the impressions that religious people have about the following clip. In the interest of full disclosure, I am not remotely religious and never have been. I do, however, think there's some value in the perspective of the clip below (in a Kierkegaardian sort of way, more or less).

This is from the short lived show Firefly, which is a Joss Whedon invention. There are two characters in the scene: Shepard Book, and River Tam. The former is an itinerant preacher, the latter is an off-the-charts genius with serious mental problems.
