Unfortunately, in the history of religion, it's been used a lot more as a weapon than a tool. It's produced a lot more heat than it's ever produced light.

Re: Teaching religion in school.

I fpeople could/would be open and interested in learning about religions or beliefs other than their own, then teaching religion in school would be a great idea. I come from CA and most people there are not very religious at all, not like the Bible Belt or the Midwest, and most people are open and talk about varying religions. I am not sure that this is a good idea for the majority of the nation though.

Blaming the object? No one is blaming objects or beliefs, we are simply pointing out they are dangerous.

Religion is NOT an object, it's fraud.

A gun is not fraud, so your analogy simlpy doesnt' hold for the case you're trying to make.

And you still have not admitted that the gun introduced inherent danger to the situation I described, you dodged it...again.

Well if that's your argument then as a theist I don't want even the most innocent and objective study of religion any wear on public school property, let alone in the classroom, as the power of government tends to turn any and everything it can into a weapon or tool for advantage.

Ok then, we'll play it your way. A gun is dangerous. But, who made it dangerous? A gun never even had to exist, its just metal and wood put together for the purpose of firing a projectile. A man crafted it, a man misused it, a man is solely responsible. I'm sorry you hate that

Will you admit that standard philosophy has beated your misguided mentality? Didn't think you would but, it did.

I'm not in favour of religion in the science class but religion is relevant in the world and its important to be able to view people through the lens of what they believe.
One of the studies that stands out in high school for me is the world religion unit in geography. I found it very interesting and it was completely appropriate for the class. We weren't being taught a religion, we were being taught about religions. Big difference.

Now, in my music appreciation class, we study world religion as it relates to the music of that religion and region. The kids are very open to it and I've had no complaints from students or parents.

That is the thing. As long as religion is not being presented as "you should believe this one" then most people are fairly open to hearing about and learning about other religions, because it is interesting.

I used to believe this were true but I have come to realize its highly impractical. Most people want and need religion. Its the best form of "social order and control for dummies"® and it works. Perhaps it will become deprecated (or a verifiable religion will emerge) but until then I think the positive impacts far outweigh the negative given the IQ of the average person today.
