Time to replace the outdated ten commandments ?

Is that to say that every version of the commandments are equally important? I think they are...but in a different sense than you would likely agree with.

It means that asking why X comes after Y if it seems to me that X is more important is not a valid exercise. It assumes the commandments are listed in order of importance or priority; a claim the scriptures don't actually make.

1.Treat your fellow human beings your fellow living things and the world in general with love honesty faithfulness and respect.

but why?? Without religion you can kill people just as easily.

Yes but religion is so good at making otherwise good people do it often :(

so then is the liberal theory that Christ didn't help when he took over the Roman Empire??

:doh

Christ took over the Roman Empire ? And there was me thinking it was the northern barbarians.

What has politics to do with religion ?

When Constantine became Christian canon law became civil law and thus was born Western Civilization.

But Constantinople was sacked in 1453 after failing to regain control of the old Roman empire after 10 centuries of trying so how can that be ?

I've often heard it said that athiests cannot be trusted to be good because they have no faith and that fewer than half of Americans would vote for any politician who declared himself to be one?

Here is an athiests take on some new rules on how to live a good and moral life in the absence of outdated religious superstition and more in tune with the moral zeitgeist of today

1.Treat your fellow human beings your fellow living things and the world in general with love honesty faithfulness and respect.

2. Always seek to be learning something new.

3. Test all things; always check your ideas against facts and be ready to discard even a cherished belief if it does not conform to them

4. Never seek to censor or cut yourself off from dissent; always respect the right of others to disagree with you

5. Form independent opinions on the basis of your own reason and experience; do not allow yourself to be led blindly by others

6. Enjoy your own sex life (so long as it damages nobody else) and leave others to enjoy theirs in private whatever their inclinations, which are none of your business

7. Do not indoctrinate your children. Teach them how to think for themselves, to value evidence and how to disagree with you

8. Do not do to others what you would not want them to do to you

9. In all things strive to cause no harm

10. Always question everything

Your thoughts ?

Since the original 10 C's have mostly morphed into the 10 Suggestions, maybe you're right, and 10 new Commandments are needed.

1. No other gods...Scratch that. Everyone buys into Jesus now, Old Man.
2. No Images...Screw that. Too much money to be made selling crosses and rosaries.
3. No taking the name in vain...Good God, are you ****ing serious?
4. Sabbath is holy....I guess the good Lord never heard of the NFL
5. Honor mother and father...Who does that anymore, especially before about age 30 or 40?
6. No killing....Yeah, right. No one pays attention to that one when the chips are in play.
7. Adultery.... Right. Tell that to Donald Trump and the Christians who voted for him.
9. No Stealing...Well, except when you can do it with a good lawyer and some clever bankers.
10. No Covet...Whoops, Madison Ave never got that memo.

Your thoughts ?

Somehow atheist 'suggestions' lack the clarity of God-given moral commandments. The Commandments were to obeyed because they were the word of God. Your list is just 'the moral zeitgeist of today.' If I break one or all of your 'suggestions' who cares?

see there, now you've got the liberal atheist all confused.

No they prevailed because they primarily relied on fear indoctrinated by religious elites on ignorant uneducated people

if fear prevents someone from being a killer thats good not bad.

Sure, there was some of that, but ultimate purpose of religion is to establish an objective code of morality; with God being that objective source. Try to imagine human history without the Ten Commandments and you will understand what I mean.

So how did non christian faiths manage without them ? Indeed it could be argued that religions like Buddhism were a darned sight less bloody

they didn't obviously. Hitler Stalin and Mao were typical in human history. This is why our Founders created a revolution for freedom from evil liberal central govt after studying all of human history. It was the norm in human history and always very bloody. When Constantine converted, canon law became civil law and thus civilization as we know it began. Now you know why time starts with Christ and why the last 2000 years have been more productive than the previous 100,000.

never, the objective in Buddism is to become one with the earth. Disease war death were largely ignored medicine technology etc all ignored so it was very deadly stupid in its own way. Christianity was all about thinking and growing and freeing the individual to decide on his own and to have his own personal relationship with God.

Priceless !! :lamo

Are you seriously trying to claim that civilization as we know it did not start until AD 325 !! ?

Nonsense. Historically Christianity was about indoctrinating fear into the gullible and uneducated masses in order for the elites who pontificated about it to gain power wealth and control over them.

Like other such medieval anachronisms it should have no place in our more enlightened modern world

good idea we should stop teaching kids the ten commandments right away!! A liberal always has such good ideas!!

How dare you use the word "teach" and "ten commandments" in the same sentence. We've stumbled upon the root of this disagreement, which is that commandments are not lessons, they are mandates. To "teach" them is to demand that children NOT think but just do what they're told, right or wrong, dumb or otherwise. Religious teachings are not nourishing to the intellects of children, they exist in spite of it.

How has this thread and this discussion and this SPECIES gone on for so long, in such deliberate confrontation to reality?

Religious teachings are not nourishing to the intellects of children,?

so??????neither is potty training yet we do it for good reason . I'm sure the victims of Dylan Roof wish he had been taught the 10 commandments!

I am sure Dylan Roof DID learn the 10 commandments.. obeying them is something else. He was a member of the St. Paul's Lutheran Church, and was very conservative.

Imagine that.. a conservative religious person doing something like that.

. a conservative religious person doing something like that.

Hitler Stalin Mao killed 200 million as liberals. Roof killed 9 and not as a Christian conservative since Christians accept the 10 commandments. Do you understand now?
