What constitutes “valid evidence” in your opinion – evidence that you respect and consider seriously in the decision-making process?

First and foremost, it needs to be empirical and measurable. All evidence must then be observed and tested, and if it doesn't hold up, then it's falsifiable. If it does hold up, then we can begin formulating hypotheses based on the actual test results. Lastly (and perhaps most important), tests performed on the empirical evidence would have to be reproducible.

This constitutes valid evidence.

It depends what decision I'm trying to make. I tried to check all except the prophets one, but the poll wouldn't accept that many.

If I'm trying to decide whether to buy X's widget or Y's widget, I like to read customer testimonials (Amazon-site-like). I don't care if they're not verifiable. They'll probably address some of my concerns, and there are usually enough of them available to read that one can get a good feel for the product. I also like opinions. "Ask the guy who owns one," works for me. So does reading the companies' promotional literature.

If I'm trying to make a financial decision, I'll use every one of those you listed except prophecy. And I'd use that if I could. Ha!

Any source that agrees with me :D

lol...j/k

This is the religion subforum. I think it goes without saying what the scope of this discussion is. But yes, I agree, the type of decision can make a difference on how scrupulous we are.

Perhaps you can explain why you believe certain evidence is valid and give examples where it is valid.

Are all of the above considered on equal weight?

For such I tried to check all except the prophets one, but the poll wouldn't accept that many.
hmm. Maybe I screwed it up. I'll ask a mod if they can look into it. I meant for people to be able to pick all of them if they wanted to.

SO you would classify testimony from random people as "valid evidence" when choosing widgets?

How about if deciding a supernatural claim is true? Or whether a particular medicine will work? How about when buying a house?

So all of those count as "valid evidence" to you when making a financial decision? You don't discriminate amongst them and they are all of equal weight in your consideration?

CC says he can't fix that option so I'll have to re-create thread.

Oh, Scourge, I'm so sorry. I never looked at the forum. That's happened to me once before with another forum. I'll try to remember to look. Out of respect for your courteous reply to my irrelevant post, I was going to answer in the forum's context, but I find myself speechless. (I'll have to write that down, doesn't happen often.)

Again, I apologize.

scourge is correct. The poll should work fine for folks.

The last two or three answers of the poll are basically the same, but they are still in the lead, which is impressive.
