They've always used the bible. They have a different translation, but its basically the same book.

Re: Jehovah's Witnesses advise against education.

Is the fact that religious groups continue to spread this kind of propaganda surprising? Why are there those who are under the delusion that this kind of thing is confined to the Jehovah's Witnesses? I find it ironic that even within the religious areas of society, there are those pointing the finger and calling these people crazy, when there are undoubtedly people of their own sect who engage in the same kind of slanderous behavior.

Oh, but they're just 'fringe fundamentalists', right?

And there are those who don't believe in the separation of Church and State. I would never want people with that kind of mentality forming public policy.

Few religions are as bad, and put out magazines twice a month telling you how to live your life, as well as a library of books you're required to read about what the bible REALLY means.

Good thing witnesses believe that all government is under the power of Satan the Wicked One, so they don't vote. (no joke)

You do know that Religious Orders founded many, perhaps most, of the noted institutions of higher learning in the Western World, yes?

Yes, but that was a very different time period than it is now.

Think you so? I'm unconvinced. I have found plenty of energized, flexible and insightful thinking among the Religious, and a great deal of hidebound, petty thought among the supposedly liberally educated.

Personally, most of the religious families I know place great emphasis on education for their children.

Yet, they also violently suppressed the findings of some of them.

Don't misunderstand. Religions have brought valuable things to society. But what religion has not done is produced anything of tangible value that cannot be achieved by secular means.

You're right, but there is still a class connection. Religion has not universally supported education among all people, only among the rich. You see, money still trumps dogmatic control.

There is mass produced religion for the rest of the drooling masses.

Your interpretation of "liberally educated" (whatever that means) is very telling. You contest one generalization while expounding another. Interesting.

I'm religious and liberally educated. Your stereotype does not fit. Most stereotypes like the above do not.

Most families I know place a great emphasis on education, regardless of religious affiliation or intensity. I'm not so sure that the correlation that you are trying to make would stand up...and if research showed that it did, there would be some methodological flaws in the types of education different families would emphasize and the impact those types of education would have on the success of children.
