I won't list all the explicit passages but this site contains a list of the Bible's most explicit verses: Evil Bible Home Page

Should the Bible be classified as X-rated literature and not be allowed to be distributed to minors or sold anywhere but adults only bookstores? Discuss.

How is one supposed to understand modern literature without knowledge of the bible, its motives are classical. As an atheist the bible has not made me a member of a cult. However, it's one of our oldest collection of (moral) stories.

The OT is a pile of filth though, kids bible ftw.

Fixed poll.

Not at all. Only material with the goal of arousal should be rated X.

The bible tells fictional stories using real life scenarios to make a point on morality. I don't have a problem with anyone reading about sex, drugs, death, etc. if there is a greater value to be had from using these topics.

Nothing good comes from sheltering kids from real life.

Hm, and people accuse Christians of trying to impose their beliefs on others....
I see nothing wrong with that as long as one's beliefs are based in reality. Christians are based on an X-rated fantasy novel. Therin lies the difference.

What about rated R then? Only 17 and up can read it without parents' permission.

EDIT: Actually Song of Solomon was the bronze age version of a paperback porno.

Have you even read the Bible?

Yeas. I used to be an evangelical Christian.

Then you know that the Bible is not X-rated.

You can't just mention the word "sex" or "intercourse" to be X-rated, you have to describe it in detail. The Bible does not do that. It occasionally mentions "intercourse", and it mentions deaths and killings, but it does not describe any of these with any details at all.

There's no logical reason why it shouldn't be appropriate for people younger than 17. Stop trying to force your beliefs on other people and tell people what they can't read.

If kids are reading things without their parents knowledge, first of all that reflects poorly on the parents, but either way, I can think of a bunch of stuff a helluva lot worse than the bible. And I'm an atheist.

I don't think religious texts should have any rating. Let the parents parent their children. The government should stay out of it.

Then you should also put the great works of the British writer, Chaucer along with your classification of X-rated literature. That work of art is routinely taught in high school and college classes. Then there is Henry Miller's book, Tropic of Cancer. Then there is the Quran. Based on your assumption, this book should not be available to anyone but adults. With all that said, what has happened to the First Amendment? You know religion is covered under that Amendment.

Amendment I

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

The bible should most difenetly not be classidied as adults only liturature.

I have compilled a list of reasons herin:
1) Banning books to some age groups would be in vain. Historically, when ever literature has been banned (be it Shakespeare or 1984) the opposite of the intended effect will result. Even if the bible was "bad", a ban to a given age group would only innitiate a greater spread of it's content. When people hear that a book is banned (in particular youth) they make the connection that it must be banned for some good reason, a reason that their currosity must discover.
2) Classify things as adult liturature does not work in general. When ever the government bans somthing people generally do it anyway. Now that doesn't mean that we should have no bans (a ban on narcotics say might be disarable), but that we should limit the amount of bans we have in society. THe onus is on those who are for banning to prove that the bible is so horribly adult-only that it must be banned - something which I think is a little ridiculous.
3) The status quo is fine! Children have been reading the bible for more than a hundred years and our society is jsut fine. Furthermore, many would say the bible actually promotes good values such as genrosity and forgiveness - while discoraging things like theft and murder.
4) A society that bans religius text for children is not a society I want to live in - nor should you. Banning text based on the fact that it's religious to children is abhorrent and fundementally undermocratic. If you can show me how bannign books has worked out great in the past, perhaps I'll change my mind but until then, no ban.

Literature shouldn't be banned or censored, period. If material is objectionable to a parent, the burden of preventing their kids from reading it lies on them, not everyone else.

Check out Song of Solomon. We're talking oral sex and more. The OT does go into lots of details.

ps - if you're telling him to stop doing something, aren't you forcing YOUR beliefs on him? Or, attempting to, more accurately :)

Noone understands it b/c of old language. Shakespeare gets pretty randy too, but most high schoolers have no idea. :2razz:

My high school english teacher pointed out some of it. probably not the wisest thing to do all things considered, but it certainly got us to pay more attention to Shakespeare.

As far as the OP, it's a parents job to decide what is appropriate or not for their kids to read, not some outside entity.

King James version or one of the retranslations into modern English?

In high school, we read one of Chaucer's tales, Chanticleer, which had been censored. I thought the whole story was boring. It wasn't until I got to college that I found Chaucer to be a whole different being. The Reeve's tale was hilarious as were so many others.

I wouldn't rate it X, but some sections would definitely be PG-13 or R if they were in the theater.

I think I understand ToothpickVic's motive. Remember back years ago when they used to dare to air XXX-rated movies? People flocked to them. Now ol' Tooth is trying to get people to go back to reading the Bible. You got to watch those Christians. They're sneaky.

This thread is nothing more than atheist hate speech.
