Washington sends $1 food stamp checks to 250,000

Washington sends $1 food stamp checks to 250,000 - Washington State | Tri-City Herald : Mid-Columbia news

OLYMPIA, Wash. The state of Washington sent out $1 checks to the 250,000 food stamp recipients in the state.

The director of the Community Services Division for the Department of Social and Health Services, Leo Ribas, says the checks mailed Feb. 17 trigger an additional $43 million in federal food benefits. They also connect recipients to an energy assistance program.

Why? What is the purpose of sending someone essentially a dollar. How much did it cost them to do this.

Anyone?

Change we can believe in.

What the hell do they mean when they say that 250,000 checks valued at $1 a piece will "trigger an additional $43 million in federal food benefits." Obviously it isn't providing the millions of dollars, so why are $1 checks required to 'trigger' them?

I imagine it's some type of matching qualifier. If you received aid for your electric bill then that qualifies you for federal aid. So the $1 from the state qualifies you for an extra $30 from the federal gov.

Ribas says the $1 check is a one-time move to leverage the federal money. He says next year the state will be able to trigger the federal assistance through a routine deposit in food stamp accounts.

It's similar to how most social programs work. Single women get more money so don't get married. You might qualify for help on your mortgage - but only if you are behind on payments so quit paying. You might qualify for a certain amount of college aid but only if you don't have savings - so don't save! States that needed to give X amount of dollars in state aid qualify for x amount of dollars in federal aid. So if you didn't have to give that amount just give it anyway to qualify for getting some more.

Just more assbackwardness. Same 'ol crap.

Christ, now even achieving mediocrity is punished.

If the State of Washington took over the beer industry there, they would not be able to manufacture it for less than 100 bucks a six pack.

I do see a parallel between Washington State and the Federal government, and that parallel is inefficiency. Monkey see, monkey do, and the State of Washington is definitely being run by monkeys, who are aping what the Federal government does. LOL.

Actually edited out part of my response after I saw Zyphlin's warning. Did not want to create a condition where I could be inviting a derailing of the thread.

As for being a racist, I really hate Martians.

I just saw Chris Gregoire -I can't stand her- on tv advising other states that if they don't need federal money don't accept it so states like Washington that need it desperately can have it. I guess our unemployment rates are now higher than the national average. Seems really bad. But give her some time I just know she can make worse.

South Carolina could probably use the money just as bad or worse, and their govenor wants to refuse any federal funding from this stimulus bill. But I guess their legislature is trying to make it so he has to take the money.

Perhaps let my clarify. If you want to make an actual argument or provide any actual substance to tie this to the federal government, Obama, or even martians ;) and do so in a substantive way, no problem as long as its still obviously connected to the topic.

One line posts trolling in hopes of baiting or driving it to an argument about something other than the topic is the issue.

Since your post was hit n run.... Let me answer your non answer anyway....

So in order to trigger more little piggies suckling at the rancid sow of the fedgov, they had to waste $250k plus expenses to get it?

Is this not waste at its finest?
