GOP Governor Sees Danger in States Accepting Stimulus Money - WSJ.com

Across the country, cash-starved governors from both parties are eagerly awaiting stimulus money from Washington, hoping to stem the recession's impact on local budgets. Not Mark Sanford, South Carolina's Republican chief executive.

"I'm opposed to it because we are at a real gut-check point on what drives our economy," Mr. Sanford said in a recent interview. Instead of fostering a market-based economy in which bad choices have consequences, Mr. Sanford said, the U.S. is in jeopardy of creating a "savior-based economy," with the federal government careening from "one ad-hoc decision to the next."

But even in Republican-led South Carolina, Mr. Sanford may have difficulty holding the line. Leaders of the GOP-controlled state legislature concede Mr. Sanford's point, but would want to at least accept the $480 million for roads, bridges and other infrastructure the state is eligible for.

I hope this guy holds his stance and doesn't accept the money.

It could set an example of what a state is supposed to do.

Sad to see states go begging to the Feds.
Something is backwards.

Just Say No.

Tennessee just annoumced where they will spend most of theirs...special interests and special needs( $2.4 billion,...for the common libreral thats 1.2+1.2=)... highways was a distant third($600 million). Job stimulus ??? I don`t think it made the cut.

We've been hearing this hypocritical doubletalk from the Republicans for weeks.

"WE HATE HATE HATE THAT DAMN COMMUNIST STIMULUS. WE'RE SHOCKED SHOCKED THAT OBAMA IS DOING THIS!!!....Come by at midnight to give us our share, and change cabs a couple of times along the way, thanks."

Palin, characteristically, is leading the way in condemning the bill while simultaneously begging Obama for pipeline money. Just as she lobbied for money for the Bridge to Nowhere and other earmarks, and then claimed she opposed it all. (Jut like McCain drank up earmarks like Foster Brooks and then condemned earmarks)

The Republicans have become the We-Hate-Federal-Spending-For-The-Other-49-States party.

Democratic Senators and Governors do accept federal money. But they don't spit on the guy who delivers the cash. They're not hypocrites.

First off... Republicans didn't vote for this.
It's yours. Your Porkorama.
And if you're going to sponsor a pork out on behalf of the drones... let's be bipartisan.

Pipeline money is money well spent.
We need to increase domestic production and build refineries.

I wish the states could run their own damn affairs.
Too much cash is gutted from Washington. It's sick.
The whole country is backwards.
The Feds should be beggars for our military and defense.
Instead they dictate, confiscate and act like they're the Camera dei Deputati in 1970.
