Direct elections of individual police officers seems like a horrible idea to me. At some point the government needs to have control over its own actions - how many thousands of ballot items can you really intelligently make a decision on every cycle?

I think the idea is more that you elect the person in charge of policing in a given town, a bit a sheriff i guess
