The top-ranking officer in the American military said on Thursday that the US is actively considering the direct use of troops in the toughest upcoming fights against the Islamic State (Isis) in Iraq, less than a week after Barack Obamadoubled troop levels there.General Martin Dempsey, the chairman of the joint chiefs of staff, indicated to the House of Representatives armed services committee that the strength of Isis relative to the Iraqi army may be such that he would recommend abandoning Obama’s oft-repeated pledge against returning US ground troops to combat inIraq.
Retaking the critical city of Mosul, Iraq’s second largest, and re-establishing the border between Iraq and Syria that Isis has erased “will be fairly complex terrain” for the Iraqi security forces that the US is once again supporting, Dempsey acknowledged.
“I’m not predicting at this point that I would recommend that those forces in Mosul and along the border would need to be accompanied by US forces, but we’re certainly considering it,” he said.

“I just don’t foresee a circumstance when it would be in our interest to take this fight on ourselves with a large military contingent,” Dempsey said.
But should the Iraqi military prove unwilling to take back “al-Anbar province and Ninewa province” – the majority of territory in Iraq seized by Isis – or should the new Iraqi prime minister, Haider al-Abadi, exclude Sunnis from power, “I will have to adjust my recommendations,” Dempsey said.

Who is ready for Iraq round 3! This is Oceania and we are coming to get ya Eurasia!

Oooo!! Oooo!!!

Send me!! Send me!!!

I could use a good tour of duty overseas right about now.

The current situation appears to be tolerable to the public.

But the political reality is that no one wants to actually have to push that button.

But i was saying to my buddy the other day, he doesn't have a choice, in the end, he will send America back into Iraq.

Whether it's tomorrow, or 6 months from now, he will have to do it and he's gonna hate it and everyones gonna hate, but that's the way it's gonna be.

I haven't been this surprised since I found out Liberace was gay.

Yes, lets use more of our hard earned tax dollars to help oppressed Iraqis. Conservatives are always up in arms about giving their money to other Americans for healthcare and food, but I bet we dont see any complain about spending twice that amount to liberate a foreign people.

so just Mosul? doesn't look like it.

What have we learned? we can't take territory for other armies, and expect them to hold it. Battle of Fallujah ring a bell? ( 10 years ago this month)

stick with the air campaign, we can't get sucked in to a land war - either Iraq takes and holds territory, or it doesn't.
The US/'coalition' can assist, (those advisors) -but we can't be their boots. they live there, their territory.

How about we just don't send in troops and have Iraqis fight their own battles?

I said this a couple of times before, either go in whole hog and kick ISIS back into Syria if not the Med or just stop, quit, bring everybody home and let the chips fall where they may. I'll support you either way. But not this incrementalism, this little itty bit escalation here and another little itty bit escalation there is not going work, I think that approach was tried 50 or so years ago. That I will not support because that will cost many times more lives and wounded then if we threw everything we had in order to win at them and quickly got this over with.

Either do it or don't, no half measures. Either win this thing and win this now or bring everyone one home and let Iraq and Syria deal with their own dang problems.

Sounds great... we will get more good movie material for Matt Damon and others to star in.

I can't say I am eager to go back but at the same time I think we need to anhilate this group and stop it from gaining momentum.
We have been pretty much sitting on our hands while they are recruiting worldwide and commuting unspeakable acts of barbarism.
We can't just bury our head in the sand and hope this goes away.

Sadly, I believe it must be done.

It is particular maddening because I see current leadership as being even less capable than the last time. We all know how that turned out.

We must either fight this cancer while it is still relatively small or wait until it grows and becomes a real threat.
