CAIRO (AP) — In a rare public apology, the military leader of al-Qaida's branch in Yemen has said that one of his fighters disobeyed orders and attacked a hospital attached to the Defense Ministry during a December assault that killed 52 people.Qassim al-Rimi, commander of al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula, said in a video posted on militant websites that the attackers were warned in advance not to enter the hospital within the complex, nor a place for prayer there. But he said one fighter did.
"Now we acknowledge our mistake and guilt," al-Rimi said in a video released late Saturday by al-Qaida's media arm al-Mallahem. "We offer our apology and condolences to the victims' families. We accept full responsibility for what happened in the hospital and will pay blood money for the victims' families."
The apology seemed prompted by Yemen state television earlier broadcasting a video showing a gunman attacking doctors and other hospital staff. Several al-Qaida jihadis tried to dismiss the video as fake on militant websites, but the outcry apparently embarrassed the al-Qaida branch to the point of issuing an unusual expression of regret from the group.
"We rid ourselves of what our brother did," al-Rimi said. "We did not order him to do so and we are not pleased with what he did."
However, al-Rimi said despite the group making a mistake, "we are continuing with our jihad."

I don't imagine in their acceptance of "full responsibility and quilt" that they will be surrendering to the authorities and putting themselves at the mercy of the court.

Sounds like they have the same problem as the CIA drone operators. That Yemeni wedding party that got roasted might be looking for a little blood money, don't you think? One would think our murderers would have a little more class, eh?

Nobody justifies murder quite as brazenly as religious zealots.

How much 'blood money' for this?

A camel and 2 goats?

If we can make everything fine with a few goats, this whole Mideast dispute could be wrapped up rather quickly with the US free of any guilt whatsoever.

So where do the socialists in the thread come down on this - pro-terrorist or pro-innocent?

Obviously socialists are on the side of extremists theocratic terrorists group who targets innocent civilians, our favorite targets are also hospitals full of children obviously.. *sarcasm off* What a ****ing idiotic question.

Well, socialists and "theocratic terrorists" are both militant, authoritarian, and obsessive. It's a legitimate question.

Clearly you've taken the pro terrorist side, so I'll take the pro innocent side.

Right after the drone teams that attack wedding parties surrender to the Pakistan courts for trial. :peace

Drone strikes (which I disagree with) excuse Al Qaida blowing up a hospital?

Who said a damn thing about excusing??? YOU wondered about the terrorists being willing to stand Trial. I merely point out they should wait their turn :peace

Good for you, and?

:doh
Thats a pretty overgeneralizing statement to call socialists "militant". True there are militant socialists. But then again there are also militant everything; capitalists, libetarians, pick your ideology your sure to find militant subsets. Same with authoritarian. True there are authoritatiran socialists but there are also authoritarian capitalits. There are also libetarian, democratic, and anarchistic socialists. Same with capitalists. And whats obsessive mean?

No and, just noting if you think the al-Qaeda fighter and his commander should surrender to the courts after admitting a wrong, then we have dozens of drone drivers and their chain of command, a few hundred 'intel' officers who should go to Pakistan and stand trial...

It was a VERY simple statement, why are you having trouble understanding?

Thats not the first appology they released. They also appologised for the 2005 bomings in Amman Jordan, because after the attacks hundreds of thousands went on the streets in that country protesting against Al Quaida.

These people are very aware of their public image.

Great, you noted that the Al Qaida attack on a yemeni hospital is not the only evil in the world. Uhm, congratulations?

U.S. drone strikes in Yemen have inflicted heavy losses on al-Qaida militants and are part of a joint U.S.-Yemeni campaign against a group which Washington has called the most dangerous branch of the global terrorist network. (AQAP)

But a Dec. 12 drone attack that mistook a wedding party convoy for an al-Qaida convoy, killing 15 people, has fueled anger against the United States and the government in Sanaa among a Yemeni public already opposed to the strikes.
Yemen's parliament later urged the government to end the use of Yemen's airspace by U.S.
I just have to wonder what this particular group is capable of. I assume this is part of AQAP's al-Baydah province group.
Which is intertwined in tribal affairs. Not to say they aren't dangerous actors.

Still I wonder what international capabilities they have stiil, as Yemen is glad for the US to fight a proxy war.

Pretty clear that the hospital attack was by a lone gunman. Not to dismiss it, but this guy Qassim al-Rimi is one of 23 men who escaped in the 3 February 2006 prison-break in Yemen, along with other notable al-Qaeda members, and whom's death has been reported multiple times.

So we gotta wonder if it's the same AQ, or just a name given to a field commander.

To the point of the apology on the hospital attack. Notice the US never apologizes, muchless barely acknowledges a "mistake"

The drone strike was followed, as always, by silence from Washington, which has acknowledged carrying out drone strikes in Yemen but never publicly comments on individual attacks. The Yemeni government, however, released a statement the following day that said the strike targeted al-Qaida militants, but neglected to mention either the country that carried out the attack or the apparent civilian casualties
Column: When your drones kill people at a wedding, an apology might be in order

**** happens, a lone gunman atack, and the US systematic targeting...well this is our payoff for perpetual war.
