NASA's rover Curiosity lands on Mars - CNN.com

(CNN) -- NASA's rover Curiosity successfully carried out a highly challenging landing on Mars early Monday, transmitting images back to Earth after traveling hundreds of millions of miles through space in order to explore the Red Planet.

The $2.6 billion Curiosity made its dramatic arrival on Martian terrain in a spectacle popularly known as the "seven minutes of terror."

This jaw-dropping landing process, involving a sky crane and the world's largest supersonic parachute, allowed the spacecraft carrying Curiosity to target the landing area that scientists had meticulously chosen.

The mission control in NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in California burst into cheers as the rover touched down. Team members hugged and high-fived one another as Curiosity beamed back the first pictures from the planet, some shed tears.

Hope there aren't any cats on Mars.

It is nice to see the progress of mankind make the news instead of what we have become accustomed to seeing in the headlines. Congrats and Thanks to NASA for their wonderful work and also thanks to USA and other contributing countries for doing their parts.

The first picture from Curiosity is now in. This is impressive.

This is a remarkable achievement. Reading up on the new landing system last week I could only think, "wow, that's a lot of moving parts to go wrong." But it seems to have gone off without a hitch.

You silly dirtlings finally achieve something and instead you'll be discussing birth certificates all day instead of your major move forward toward joining the inter-galactic federation.

You think I'm kidding. I'm not.

Today, your planet really did something important.

Inter-galactic travel is highly improbable given the limitations of c.

Anyways, yay!

Excellent news. Now let's just push a little more money in and get that manned programme back on track - we should be on Mars by now.

A little more? A manned trip would be exponentially more expensive.

I'd much rather be using the money sending a rover-like mission to Europa. Other than chest beating nonsense, what good does sending people to mars do if it's just to walk around/collect samples/etc, same crap robots can do.

I remember when this was pure Sci-Fi

Never say never!

This is easily possible in physics realms, inter-galactic travel will not be. We can only hope in the very far future we develop such technology but, as time goes on, the galaxies will move farther and farther away. The closest we will get is when Andromeda collides with us.

Love how Obama congratulated NASA and claim how great we are, when earlier he trashed the shuttle program....And the funding went to Global Warming research...... Good plan....

He can't win with you, can he?

Yeah cause worrying about how much money something cost that is not really any direct benefit to anyone sure is unreasonable, especially when our country is in debt.Maybe the next big waste of money should be building a landing strip on the moon.

Why would we want to be on Mars? There ain't **** there.

Why?

Seems to me that there has to be a better reason to invest a few hundred billion dollars on a manned launch beyond...cuz...we...can? If the unmanned mission develops some sort of earth shaking return then there may be a valid reason to do it.

Ive read that there may be some H3 deposits on the moon that might greatly contribute to resolving our energy concerns. That might be a more logical step. Meanwhile...they can certainly continue to gather and collect data.

No benefits? Space exploration brings no benefits? Other than satellite technology, solar power, foam mattresses, corldless drills, baby food, medical imaging devices, artificial limbs, modern insulation, artificial hearts, infrared hand-held cameras, pens that work in zero-gravity... never mind the possibility of humanity extending its horizon still further, at a time when our world is full to bursting and running out of resources... but of course, if something offers no immediate benefit, we shouldn't bother, right? With that sort of thinking we would never have developed agriculture.

well, there is a ton of beachfront property, but the climate sucks and the atmosphere is 95% CO2.

Please don't forget to thank our wonderful manchild in chief, Obama, for cutting NASA.....

Yes, why does Obama think that NASA is unimportant? He asks the head of NASA to focus on "Islamic Relations", instead of projects like this one. Remember that folks? Yes, Mr. Obama has cut NASA'S budget by over half. He's such a friend to scientific and technological advancement isn't he???
