I think whipping serves a legitimate corrective purpose.
Come on over cowboy....

Yes. Eye for an Eye literally in this case. I think its a great thing. Maybe if more countries would take a harder stance on criminals we would not have so many criminals.

I honestly don't know.

On the one hand, what he did to her is heinous. The way women are treated in so much of the Mid East is appalling, and this is just one small example. I am surprised the court even ruled the way it did, against a man who harmed a woman, and in a sense I'm gratified they did so. My understanding is that Iranian women rarely get anything like justice from Iranian courts.

My knee jerk reaction is to say Yeah, he deserves it, except it needs to be a full bucket of acid just like he did to the woman. It might send a message to other men in the region that they can't get away with stuff like this towards women, as is all too often the case.

OTOH, as Viktyr points out, this doesn't heal anyone or compensate them for anything. All it does is make another person dependent on whatever charity might be available, whether it is gov't or private or family charity. It might be better to make him work the rest of his life and pay her everything he makes except a tiny amount that's just enough to keep him alive. She, however, seems to prefer the acid punishment.

Tashah makes a good point, that supporting this just reinforces the other barbaric punishments Iran often metes out to far less deserving victims... even to innocents, like the poor woman who killed a man in defense against rape, and was supposed to be beheaded (a year ago?). What if it were some place other than Iran? Some place not known for the horrific miscarriages of justice that Iran is known for. Would that make a difference?

He needs to be punished, severely... what he did was as appalling as it gets. It is difficult to decide what would really be appropriate, adequate, and reasonable.

The justice system should not be about revenge. There may be some hope of reform for this chap or a small (extremely unlikely) chance that he is innocent. If he can be reformed or is innocent, then what?

I have the same conflicted feelings. It's why I haven't voted yet in my own poll. I'm leaning toward yes though. Let the bastard feel, to some degree, what he put his victim through. There's a pic of the young lady in the article I linked in the OP. It's hard to fathom all she's been through. No, it won't change her condition, but I bet she'd feel a greater sense of justice if he joined her. It'll be interesting to see if Iran carries through with this.

What I do? I tried to choose my wording carefully, but I'm kinda tired too.

You didn't do anything. She was just being snarky as usual.

Isn't execution an option? It strikes me that the kind of nutcase that is going to attack women with Acid isn't going to be improved much by lesser forms of punishments.

5 drops/eye does not equal a bucket full in the face. He needs the bucket treatment for this eye-for-an-eye punishment to be realistic.

That's what I would prefer, but he only blinded her; it's not like he slept with her or anything.

There is an interesting book by Robert Heinlein called "The number of the beast", which is about a man who built a machine that could go into any alternate universe. Some of them were weird. One universe was exactly the same as ours, except the letter I was missing from the English language.

In one universe, a man was convicted of causing a car accident which crippled the leg of his victim. He was sentenced to an "adjustment", which consisted of him being tied down to a road, then a car running over his leg to cripple him the same way. Interesting book.

However, there is a reason we don't do to perpetrators what they did to their victims. It is because we are better than the perpetrators are. End of discussion.

well, this is Iran. If he had raped her she would be getting executed.

This is exactly type of punishment subscribed under Shari law. If that is to be applied fairly, this is the only way of doing it.

Both parties would be ... I think, but thats not the subscribed punishment under Shari law.

Disfigured Woman Hails 'Eye-For-An-Eye' Blinding Of Attacker In Iran - Radio Free Europe / Radio Liberty © 2011

I think the punishment assessed here is interesting, it truly is an "eye for an eye". Understanding, of course, that this would never happen in the US, do you think, given the crime, that this is an appropriate punishment? I'm not asking if this would be Constitutional in the US, clearly it would not. I'm more asking if this fits in with your personal perceptions of what a just or appropriate punishment would be. I'm torn myself, it sure seems barbaric but so was the attack on the lady and this would certainly put the attacker in the same situation as he put her in. So here's the poll question;

Should Man Who Attacked Woman with Acid Be Blinded by Acid as Punishment?

It is their law. The international community should have no say in their law. The person knew that there was the "eye for an eye" law, so yes, he should be blinded with acid.

The guy willfully threw acid in her face, with full knowledge of what the consequences would be for her, purely out of hate. He simply didn't care. There is no justification and are no mitigating circumstances as far as I can tell. This was not a spur-of-the-moment thing he did before he could get himself under control. There is no doubt he is the one that committed the crime. His crime has caused her permanent injury that is impossible for anyone to right. When all of these things combine, I honestly don't even see anything morally reprehensible about the punishment that has been ordered.
