A man who compromises freedom for security deserves neither.

I don't need a bloated, inept bureaucracy to do things for me. I just need them to stay out of my way.

It may be a simple question, but the answer isn't so simple. Protecting freedoms and security go hand in hand. Government's primary job is to do both within a balance that maximizes both.

Re: Is the goverments primary job to protect your freedoms or to protect your securit

The government is supposed to do both, but in practical terms there is a tradeoff. More of one usually comes at the expense of the other. The trick is to find a healthy balance that optimizes both.

Re: Is the goverments primary job to protect your freedoms or to protect your securit

The main purpose of government is to protect and proliferate our rights and liberties. Security, of course, is part of that. There is some amount of government force necessary to ensure the free exercise of our rights and guarantee the blessings of liberty to our posterity. Security should not come at the cost of our rights, however. We have to understand that on some level, free has never been and never will be safe. There are reasonable steps to take to ensure the exercise of our rights; but if we tread too far we will not be anymore "secure", but we will certainly be less free.

the governments PRIMARY job, is to protect freedoms... all security you need is already included in that, like anything that violates your liberty is subjected to be protected by the government because it violates your freedom.

Re: Is the goverments primary job to protect your freedoms or to protect your securit

Simple enough question.

Both, they are two sides of the same coin.

Re: Is the goverments primary job to protect your freedoms or to protect your securit

Neither. It is the government's job to maintain order. Freedom and security are our responsibilities.

Re: Is the goverments primary job to protect your freedoms or to protect your securit

The government's job is to protect both. And it's a difficult job because protecting one often compromises the other.

I personally think its the role of government to stop gays from getting married...

Helps me sleep at night.

Re: Is the goverments primary job to protect your freedoms or to protect your securit

"Freedoms" are just non-physical versions of security. It is supposed to protect both.

I don't know...
Probably the security......but lets not get so carried away with this, as we are now.
The "security" at the VA is a case in point...they seem to live in fear.
I do not want a police state....
The "freedoms" - its up to us...be ever vigilant, participate in politics, do more than just vote...take an interest.
Interesting, intelligent responses...
