They're actually required in order to maintain the 1st amendment.

What are you talking about that they can't perform a legal wedding for a state? Why can't they? What rule is there against doing so? You can't say that DOMA prevents them because there is no language in DOMA that prevents a chaplain from presiding over a wedding ceremony for a same sex couple. DOMA only deals with the government not legally recognizing the marriage and other states not being forced to recognize SSMs from other states. However, the military wouldn't have to actually recognize a marriage presided over by a chaplain with DOMA still in place, but it would go at least a step further in making same sex couples feel less discriminated against by allowing them to have a military wedding, on base and/or officiated by a military chaplain. No laws or rules would be being broken once DADT is officially gone.

Yes everywhere because the federal government shouldn't be telling people who and who they can't enter a private contract with.

Wow. Because he's a federal officer....he must always follow the rules a nd regulations of the dod and the federal government no matter where he is. Even a reservist should be able to understand this......

Can military members smoke pot in Alaska? Can we ride motorcycles without helmets in states that don't require them? Can we do steroids in Argentina where they are available over the counter?

Were you not listening? The Navy tried to change the rules and regulations so that chaplains whose religion recognized same sex marriage, could be free to conduct such ceremonies. Then a bunch of butt hurt GOP House twerps got together and started bitching that the Navy was violating DOMA, even though their true agenda was to force their religious beliefs down those chaplains throats.
