If you had to choose one of these two places to live for the rest of your life.....

Where would you choose to live?

Let's say you MUST choose to either live in a wide open space, far from city lights or right in the center of a huge urban area....which would you choose?

You couldn't pay me to live in a city. Been there done that, didn't like it. For lots of different reasons.

Re: If you had to choose one of these two places to live for the rest of your life...

I'm definitely not a city girl. I would choose wide open spaces any day.

Re: If you had to choose one of these two places to live for the rest of your life...

Rural, no contest.

Re: If you had to choose one of these two places to live for the rest of your life...

How are the job prospects in the rural area?

Re: If you had to choose one of these two places to live for the rest of your life...

Neither. Suburbs are clearly superior to either option.

Re: If you had to choose one of these two places to live for the rest of your life...

I've lived both, each had their drawbacks. I'd need quiet for my work, but I'm likely to wind up back in the metro whenever I move from my current locale.

Re: If you had to choose one of these two places to live for the rest of your life...

You forgot to say, where. For me, the suburbs are the worst of both worlds. No, actually, the 'burbs are hell. I have lived out in the country but now I'm living downtown in a city but my city is in Mexico. If I had to move I would probably live in another city in Mexico. If for some bizarre reason I had to live in the U.S., I would definitely live way out in the country. Is Ted Kasinsky's shack up for sale?

Re: If you had to choose one of these two places to live for the rest of your life...

I've lived in rural area's all my life, and I'd much rather be in a city.

Re: If you had to choose one of these two places to live for the rest of your life...

I live in the suburbs, I like the suburbs. But If I had the choose I'd rather live in the city than the countryside.

City. I like being within 5 minutes of shopping, hospitals, restaurants, etc. I'm also not big on nature, especially bugs.

I don't mind nature, I just don't like to live in the middle of nowhere and having your closest neighbors be a mile away.

Yeah...I'm paranoid..if something bad happens and I'm 40 minutes away from the closest ER I'd be absolutely freaked...same for cops and fire. I want 'em close.

Having lived in the boondocks of SC for 12 years and in Boston for 4 years, it is without question a city.

I couldn't imagine anything better, most people annoy the **** outta me, and plus when the rural area I like has places like this:

Why the hell wouldn't I.

So, that is why you live in Australia. It seemed like everywhere I went when I was there was like it. It was absolutely beautiful, but I could never live there for long stretches.

I would love that. I've had some really annoying neighbors in my lifetime.

Re: If you had to choose one of these two places to live for the rest of your life...

I would never live in a city, I want my space, I don't want my neighbors in my business, I want privacy.

Re: If you had to choose one of these two places to live for the rest of your life...

I think I would be claustrophobic in a big city - way too many people, buildings, noises, etc.

All things being equal (like cost of living vs income, health, etc) I would choose urban in a heart beat. If nothing else, there is always something interesting happening and there is always the wonderful restaurants plus public transportation is less of a PITA than driving. I say this after having lived in a rural and urban area and know what life is like in either place.

I didn't have to live in the middle of nowhere, but I chose to. Big cities, while I like to visit them every now and then, make me claustrophobic.

I've lived in both and I'm going with rural. No contest.

I would rather live in a big city or a rural area rather than the suburbs(which I live in). You have all the peace and land in the country, and the big city features great attractions.

I would prefer the suburbs, by FAR over either, but if I had to choose between rural or city, it really is no contest. I HATE the city (I live about 30 minutes from NYC and go there about once every 5 or 6 years, if that). Rural for sure.

Re: If you had to choose one of these two places to live for the rest of your life...

Living in the country sounds wonderful. The country air(till the pig farmer sets up shop a couple miles away and after that everything you own, including your clothes and yourself smell of pig **** and you can never get rid of the smell), the lack of traffic(except dear, which you will hit far too often), the open spaces(until you realize that to go anywhere takes an hour).

After that, living in the city sounds great. Close to everything(until it takes 15 minutes just to pull out of your driveway...hint: if you live on a busy street, make sure you can turn around in your driveway, backing onto a busy road sucks), businesses handy(until that free enterprising prostitutes and drug dealers start working your area), lots of nice neighbors(until they party loud until 4 am).

Living in suburban areas gives you almost all the good, with vastly reduced problems. Traffic is not as bad, getting places is still quick, neighbors are handy and nice, but not too close and they don't deal crack, crime is fairly low, air is fairly clean and does not smell of pig ****.
