I wonder what the reaction would have been if it were called "Operation Raghead"? Come on... much ado about nothing... Libs need to get over it...

Well I am a lib and said it was not big deal. So it is not just the libs:)

I agree Kali, there seems to be near universal agreement on this question, at least from those who have voted.

This is basically what I always thought the meaning of "Geronimo" was...

Geronimo - definition of Geronimo by the Free Online Dictionary, Thesaurus and Encyclopedia.

Geronimo [dʒəˈrɒnɪˌməʊ]
1. (Military) US a shout given by paratroopers as they jump into battle
2. an exclamation expressing exhilaration, esp when jumping from a great height

In my mind, Geronimo means "taking a leap of faith"... which is exactly what this mission was. The name was appropriate in my opinion.

Do you think anyone would give a crap if the name of the mission was Geronimo?

People were offended when it was (presumed?) that the code name was for OBL.

How exactly the term was used remains unclear. After bin Laden was killed, the military sent a message back to the White House: "Geronimo EKIA" — enemy killed in action. U.S. officials have since said that "Geronimo" was the name of the operation itself and that "Jackpot" was the code word for bin Laden.

A White House spokesman referred questions about the code name to the Pentagon, the Associated Press reports, noting that a Defense Department spokeswoman declined to comment.

An unnamed source says Geronimo was not the code name for OBL? Every other source I've seen says it was. What US official is referenced?

Besides, "<mission name> EKIA" doesn't make any freakin' sense.

Sorry to bump but I am confused about this a bit now as Obama clearly said last night in the 60 Mins interview that Geronimo was the codeword for if UBL was inside there. So maybe that was his codename afterall? Hell at this point I am not sure anymore:2razz:

That has always been my understanding of the administration's position. Of course everyone in DC likes to pretend to be in the know, and the media prints every snippet of gossip as if it's gospel after a huge story like this... but as far as I know, the whitehouse has always maintained that Geronimo was the codeword for OBL, since they still weren't 100% positive it would be him.

Have you all heard of the controversy surrounding the use of the name Geronimo for the successful military operation that killed Osama bin Laden?

Do you agree? Is an apology in order?

(I admit, I'm especially curious what the liberals here think.)

In your little, 'bait the liberals' OP, you forgot to mention your thoughts on the matter.

Personally, as a writer, I'm offended they didn't come up with a better code word.

But what about them coming out saying he was codename jackpot and E for enemy? It really is not a good thing to send out all these mixed messages. And the media does not help trying to be first to say whatever. If media is first with crap facts you still suck even if you are first. lol..

I wonder now if Obama will issue an apology to Native Americans. No getting around him saying it flat out on nat tv for the world to see.
