According to what I've read and heard, the SEAL team went in knowing there was only a 60%-80% bin Laden was there. The code word to announce that bin Laden was indeed there was "Geronimo". The uncoded message meant "bin Laden's presence verified. He was killed in action." As I've said, the code word to verify bin Laden's presence was brilliant, IMHO.

Well, hell, you gotta call him something in code-speak. Why not a respected name, to throw the eavesdroppers off?

To be fair, tho, I would have objected if they had called him "Custer." I would have gone with my own Indian name: Walks Like a Woman.

WTF would YOU know...YOU think they are talking about dot not feather Indians!

My point is that I can see why some would be upset and I dont think we have to go through this conniption fits over simple oversights. Obviously some folk are offended...is it REALLY such a bad thing to validate their expressed feelings and move forward?

Re: Should Obama's Admin Apologize to Native Americans for Using "Geronimo" codeword?

    Let's see....

....Geronimo is a proper noun, and hence not likely to turn up on the normal radio traffic from an capture/execution mission.

....Geronimo has four syllables, making it more likely to be heard over radio static or the noise of conflict on scene.

....Geronimo has a distinct sound unlike any other in the language.

All in all, as a code word to convey a single distinct concept, it's admirable, and finally, no one not part of the mission listening to the communications won't know what it means.

Finally, didn't the mission planners have more important things to be thining about?

    What's not to like?

Bin Laden, Geronimo link angers Native Americans - Yahoo! News

Do you agree? Is an apology in order?

(I admit, I'm especially curious what the liberals here think. )
When I was a kid I use to yell 'geronimo' whenever I was rushing the treehouse with the hose.

Only in my later years did I learn that he was a real person.

And so I don't associate the word at all with him - at all - unless I have context.

I wonder what the reaction would have been if it were called "Operation Raghead"? Come on... much ado about nothing... Libs need to get over it...
