Re: Euthanasia Coaster - Should this be illegal?

It is not unusual these days for the hospital to assist in the passing of someone terminally ill, by giving them more morphine than they can handle in their weakened state. This is usually done at the family's request. No one uses the term "lethal dosage" but everyone knows what is being done.

If I am ever lying in a hospital bed, suffering and beyond any hope of recovery, I hope someone does me that kindness... and not having to ask is a kindness as well. People who are past any chance of recovery or of ever leaving the hospital should not be forced to linger on in pain because their family lacks the moral courage to ask for the maximum morphine dosage.

Nitrogen's the way to go. An ex-Tory MP investigated the death penalty and though he came out against in principle, his research on humane methods came up with nitrogen, which displaces the oxygen and suffocates you, but you only get a mild buzz before lights out. He discussed it with a rabid US death penalty fan as a solution for the "cruel and unusual punishment" problem, and got a "Hell, NO! They gotta suffer!" reply.

Are you sure about this? This seems like an awful big risk for a hospital to take. I'm not saying you're wrong because I can't find much on this on the Internet either way, it seems to be a taboo topic, but wouldn't it just take one disgruntled family member and a rent-a -lawyer to cause a lot of problems for the hospital and the medical staff involved in something like this?

It's openly discussed, just carefully worded.
