Should people in jail have to pay for their incarceration if they have the means?

Why should taxpayers have to pay for O.J. Simpson's incarceration? Martha Stewart's? Your own when you're thrown in jail for drunk driving? I say that if one has personal assets to cover their own incarceration costs, that should be part of the punishment. If they don't have the assets, no harm. But why should taxpayers pay to incarcerate someone who's broken the law?

No. We pay because we are responsible for our own safety. We can't demand a service without paying for it.

It seems wrong in ways I cannot explain.

No, however I have no problems with inmates having to work for no pay that would go towards the state to help pay for their incarceration.

THe answer no immediately came to mind. Should we imprison his teachers who failed to learn him an occupation?

    Definately not

It makes the potential abuse far to great

Lets say the local government is alittle short on tax revenues for the year, so they set up a quota for a number of arrests and convictions to confiscate the property of people and make them pay inflated rates for their incarceration. The number of false arrests and convictions would sky rocket while the local government gains revenue without raisig taxes

No, because it adds an additional punishment to the sentence, one which is automatic if its law, to criminals for no other reason than they have wealth. But another individual who committed the same crime will get off relatively easier, thats not fairness under the law.

This would work out way better than having people pay for their incarceration IMO.

Society needs to bear the cost of putting people in prison. It provides an important check against overly strict laws. If you complain about spending too much money on prisons, that is a sign that you are sending too many people away.

Re: Should people in jail have to pay for their incarceration if they have the means?

Hmm. Well, I definitely think that they should NOT have to pay for the guards and the upkeep of the prison itself, since those are things that society (not the convict) wants. But I'm a little more torn on whether or not they should have to pay for their own room and board. After all, they'd have those expenses anyway, even if they weren't in prison.

Although in theory I can't see anything wrong with making them pay for their room/board, in practice I agree that there is a potential for abuse, so perhaps it would be best if we just didn't go down that road at all.
