Half Ton Teen: Is This Child Abuse?

Is This Child Abuse?

Keep in mind these are teens/Kids we are talking about. This is not adults.

Problem is that we have come to accept this as a society, so there is no incentive on the part of the parents to control their children. Also, but the time you are a teenager, you should definately know better. What we need to be able to do is to TELL people that they are FAT and they need to lose weight. We need to stop having civil rights for cellulite... we need the fat advocacy groups to stop complaining when fat people are required to purchase two seats on a plane... we should not accomodate to THEM. THEY are the ones with a problem, not those of us who are at the natural and normal weight for a human being...

I am sick and tired of making excuses for fat people. We can't say what we think about them because it will hurt their feelings... They can't be faulted for their fatness because someone else is always to blame. HOGWASH!!! If you are fat and obese, it is YOUR FAULT! No one elses... It is about time we can tell people that. I am tired of people telling me I am too thin (BTW, I am thin, but also athletic and rather muscular). The fact is, I am NOT too thin, but it usually comes from people who are actually a little bit on the fat side... but I can't say that... can it... it is rude and impolite... REDICULOUS!!! Fat people are FAT!!! it is about time they realize this and do something about it... and if one of those fatsos EVER oozes over into my airplane seat that I can COMFORTABLY sit in... %$^%$%!!!!

Ya knpw I'm starting to feel the same.

And OMG The Hoarders! Clean the damn house or I'm going to just torch it you lazy disgusting excuse of a person!

"But I have wants and needs that are important to me as an individual"

Slaps hoarder "Snap out of it!"

But with hoarders? A lot of it is mental illness. Same with overeating.

Depends. Do those children have a medical condition? How old are they? Do the parents try to restrict them on what they eat and how much they eat?

I think the show only covers non-medical cases. They are obviously teens, so 13-19. The parents are obviously horrible for not realizing the red flag.

Except that I don't... and if I did, it would be from a safe distance... I would love to see one of them try to catch me... even were he "muscular"

Those world's strongest men shows are a joke... yeah, they are strong, but their fitness level leaves MUCH to be desired...

Umm. On this same level should I be able to tell you that you are too thin and need to eat? Did not think so. No offense but You are coming off as a snobby skinny bitch.

I am HEALTHY... which is something I can't say for some 300lb tub-a-lub wearing a speedo on the beach... talk about sight pollution...

And believe me, I eat plenty... more than most without a doubt

Do you see the thread topic? These are just kids. I refuse to talk about teens in this fashion. If you wish to bash some adult wearing a speedo down at the beach? You will have my support. But these are children. BTW, I feel we should outlaw the speedo as it looks bad on everybody:(

They aren't "just kids". They're teenagers and capable of making their own decisions. They made the decision to become fat, and that's their fault. Teenagers and adults are supposed to take responsibility for their actions. Kids 12 and under do not.

Hard to say what will help anyone lose weight, I think the key is to find out what they are missing in their life they are replacing with food.

That is unless there is a medical reason.

I think the right kind of LOVE can help, not only kids but even old Dudes, and Babes.

You know, some people actually SWIM in them.... you know???

Kids, i would agree... Teens should know better...

If extreme malnourishment is abuse, denying adequate medical care is abuse, then so is extreme overindulgence.

The only people who tend to get offended by that are the parents and individuals who somehow support it or condone it.

You can say whatever you want, it's America.

Holly crap! Do you people that voted yes know the definition of abuse?

Any recent act or failure to act on the part of a parent or caretaker, which results in death, serious physical or emotional harm, sexual abuse, or exploitation, or an act or failure to act which presents an imminent risk of serious harm

So my question is do you feel it is child abuse to overfeed your children and allow them to overeat to the point of being this obese? :(

In general, sure. I mean, I think parents around the world do all sorts of evil, disturbed, destructive, and abusive things to their children and themselves. But legal child abuse? Not seeing how that's useful. That would take near infinite time and resource to solve everything I thought was a problem with other people. I'm going to die soon enough, I'd prefer to pursue my own life and family and friends if I have to choose.

In general terms I see the greatness of the U.S. was the decision to protect people from everyone else.
Every time we step in and command they follow our decree, we chip away at that at our own peril.

Was this the kid?

If so, I saw the episode. I remember the mom being pretty messed up in the head. She wanted to keep him dependent on her and she obstructed the health professionals trying to help him. When she was around, she treated him like a 2 year old and he acted like one too. It also seemed she enjoyed the attention, like a Munchhousen (however you spell that) by proxy thing. I don't know that I think it's abuse but the mom needs to be on meds or something.

As a side note, when I comes to adults that let themselves get so big they don't leave the bed for years, I seriously wonder what mindset it takes to be ok with letting yourself live like that.

That sounds like abuse. I have seen really obese kids on talk shows and their parents brag about letting them eat all the time... I saw a mother on the show, and she put a crown on her daughter's head and give her a feast, all unhealthy food, and let her pig out. Then she kept yelling at the audience that her princess was beautiful. I thought that was really disturbing. This is not considered child abuse, at least not by according to traditional definition of child abuse but it's still abuse and these parents are putting their children's health and lives at risk.

It always bothers me when I see parents with obese kids and feeding them unhealthy on a daily basis. They won't even consider putting them in sports or getting them to exercise. Just let them eat mc donalds all day, and play xbox.

On the show after he had been in hospital the first time and was allowed to go home so he could lose enough weight to get to a treatment center/rehab? She would still bring him home all kinds of junk foods and things. He had to get to a certain weight before he could be safe for surgery and she was not helping at all. She was an enabler.

That is messed up. She was pretty much encouraging him to kill himself... wtf. I'd say that is abuse and it is very tragic and sad.

Well maybe she should get some help too. The kid makes a choice too though, and it could be tough to resist temptation particularly from a family member. But the doctor told him the score, he's aware of the consequences now. The mom probably needs to get some help herself, she most likely has problems of her own.

I don't consider his condition his fault. His mother feed him and was making his diet choices before he knew better, and she had to know where he'd end up. He was just a kid, and he is right where his mother wants him. It's true he has the ability to change his life, but it sounds like his mother is now an obstacle and helping himself may mean rejecting mommy. She is probably manipulating him out of some mental issue she has or something.

I am thin too... but I am not angry or judgmental towards overweight people. Some people are genetically prone to being obese... other people have health conditions like diabetes and health disease that leads to extra weight or depend on medication that can cause them to balloon up or retain lots of water, or they are just physically disadvantaged.

I am thankful I don't have to work as hard to thin, and I can enjoy sweets and ice cream frequently... I have heard horror stories about people getting by pass surgeries to save their life, and I am always thankful that isn't me.

Compulsive overeating is recognized as a eating disorder, just like anorexia or bulimia.

I have a feeling ludahai probably wouldn't have a problem with anorexics though... just the "fatties," because he seems to really hold a lot of animosity towards them for unknown reasons

There ya go nice post shewolf. Im a big guy but never obese or overweight, I couldnt afford the luxury I had to pass a physical accruity test yearly.
Not all overweight people are gluttons, theres a variety of reasons and I believe it is definitely a psychological state and an addiction. I personally feel bad for truly obese people...do any of you really think they want to obese and unattractive.
I think its a falling in the pit thing once you start sliding down the obese slope its very had to put on the brakes and reverse it.

It's true that it's a lot easier to gain weight than to lose it... Some people have to always diet and eat healthy to be thin, and they just look regular thin not stick thin like some models.

My gran is diabetic and she eats the same thing for breakfast... fruit and a bagel with low fat spread and hot tea. She eats a healthier breakfast than I usually do, and we eat about the same portions for lunch and dinner but she is overweight and I am not. She is also handicapped and she is in her 80s... She is not glutton or lazy for her age or physical capability.

I also work in a support group for survivors of rape and incest, and a lot of members have eating disorders... some are anorexic, bulimic, and then you have the compulsive overeaters. One member even said he intended to overeat and gorge until he became obese in hopes that his childhood predator would think he was ugly and leave him alone. Depression and mental illness does play a role in eating disorders. It's not simply a matter of being physically lazy.
