Half Ton Teen: Is This Child Abuse?

Is This Child Abuse?

I am thin too... but I am not angry or judgmental towards overweight people. Some people are genetically prone to being obese... other people have health conditions like diabetes and health disease that leads to extra weight or depend on medication that can cause them to balloon up or retain lots of water, or they are just physically disadvantaged.

I am thankful I don't have to work as hard to thin, and I can enjoy sweets and ice cream frequently... I have heard horror stories about people getting by pass surgeries to save their life, and I am always thankful that isn't me.

So, TWO THIRDS of Americans are prone to being overweight or obese? Do you HONESTLY believe that? Face it... Americans are LAZY... they don't care about their own physical fitness. There is a stereotype around the world about Americans and their weight issues. It is pathetic when I walk around here and nearly every American and Canadian I see here tips the scales at well over 200 points. A couple of weeks ago, I saw a particularly obese man with an armfull of food at Costco... and he was eating alone...

Don't give me this genetic bullcrap. Americans are lousy eaters and don't exercise enough... Once again, the excuses from those defending the fat and obese rear their ugly head.

Compulsive overeating is recognized as a eating disorder, just like anorexia or bulimia.

I have a feeling ludahai probably wouldn't have a problem with anorexics though... just the "fatties," because he seems to really hold a lot of animosity towards them for unknown reasons

Not true... you love to put words in the mouths of others, don't you. I prefer the more atheltic type. That French model that died a few weeks ago (the anorexic one) was just plain disgusting...

A pretty, in shape Taiwanese girl (especially a runner or triathlete) is about as good as it gets...

So I been watching re-runs of this show on OWN and am starting to wonder if this is some form of child abuse. I mean these teens did not get this big without the help of their parents and it breaks my heart to watch them struggle and one of them even died. Or maybe all of them as this is a repeat of a show that aired on other networks.

So my question is do you feel it is child abuse to overfeed your children and allow them to overeat to the point of being this obese? :(

I know that in our culture sometimes cooking and feeding is the act of showing love but feeding your children to the point where it takes the fire dept. to get them out of the house and to the hospital is not love.

I believe society should be able to control itself.
I also believe companies have doped up society and have made us addicted to food; from commercials and advertising we see as children through adulthood, companies do share some of the blame.

If you read my comments, you'd notice I said that parents should teach their children better habits. It really makes me mad when people feed their kids fast food, their overweight, and the parents don't put them in sports or nothing.

Americans don't exercise a lot compared to other countries, and Americans spend more time working a day than other countries, so busy Americans tend to find fast food convenient. Most Americans don't walk to a market everyday and buy fresh foods, nor are most American towns and cities arranged in a way that makes walking everywhere easy. I used to live in Europe myself. I know how it is here, and it has a lot to do with culture, not just gluttony.

They aren't "just kids". They're teenagers and capable of making their own decisions. They made the decision to become fat, and that's their fault. Teenagers and adults are supposed to take responsibility for their actions. Kids 12 and under do not.

But they became bigger before they reached their tweens and teens. "Little" Bill was not a big baby or toddler, he started getting bigger when he was maybe around 10-12 year old range and it was due to what food he was fed and non-active lifestyle.

It is not like these teens just got fat as soon as they hit 13. It took sometime to put the weight on and their parents are a major factor in this.

Not only this, but next time you go to the grocery store look around and see how much of it is processed, unhealthy food. I'd say about 98% of the supermarket is processed, fatty, carby unhealthy crap loaded with preservatives, artificial flavors/colors and other unidentifiable chemicals.

True but look around at the price of fresh healthy foods. People have to have food to eat and they are gonna buy what fits into their budget. This is why I really wish people that own any kind of land would start doing a garden. Heck you can even do container gardens if you have a small place. Honestly this summer? I am helping with a community garden and am also planting things in my own yard to where this summer? I am gonna eat mainly out of these. Now while I love fresh foods? I am not a rabbit so there will still be meat, fish and chicken tossed in. :)

Healthy foods really aren't more expensive than processed crap, that's pretty much a myth, you can eat healthy, fresh foods for the same budget as you would processed garbage.

It is not a myth. Fresh foods cost more than processed foods and that is a fact.

Also d9o not forget that weather plays a major part in reguards to fresh foods while processed foods stay the same pretty much.

I think it would be abuse if it reaches a 1/2 ton, this is to the extreme and the parents should have called for help. That said, if this was due to a natural occurrence that was beyond the parents control then it is not abuse.

Natural occurences have a tendency to be self regulating if the food is locked up...

...all those parents had to do was stock up on broccoli and the kid wouldn't have been able to grow that big.

And were you aware that a good solid dill pickle has zero calories and zero carbs and zero protein? It's the perfect snack food!

So, put the kid on the broccoli and pickle diet, and she'll be svelte in no time.

I'm goibg to go to the Whole Foods and complain about the lack of junk food.

Dude! You don't even have any cheesy puffs.!

As a side note, when I comes to adults that let themselves get so big they don't leave the bed for years, I seriously wonder what mindset it takes to be ok with letting yourself live like that.

The Mayor wonders more about the mindset that brings a human cetacean food when it can't get it's own, and if they're in bed for years, is the person hauling the food hauling the poo?

No it isn't!

Yes it is. It is much cheaper to feed a family with that $3 processed family sized frozen lasagna than it is is making it fresh.

You can say it all ya want but the fact is that it cost more to eat healthy in this country and that is a shame.

No it isn't, it just seems that way because if you buy the ingredients they will altogether cost more than that one lasagna yet you would be able to make like 5 times as much food.

And you can say it all ya want but the fact is that it does not cost more.

They aren't "just kids". They're teenagers and capable of making their own decisions. This is simply NOT TRUE ! Some will never able able to make the "right" decision... They made the decision to become fat this I cannot believe , with all the negative stigma attached to this condition... , and that's their fault. Teenagers and adults are supposed to take responsibility for their actions. Kids 12 and under do not.
Few are able to be 100% "responsible"....
I am not 100%, I'd like to be....I'm human....
Do Libertarians think they are "perfect" ?

One does not have to have a 100% diet of whole, fresh foods to be healthy. The key is moderation with adequate exercise. Granted, there is nothing moderate about my workout regimin and few can match it, but you don't have to. I do eat snack foods and drink Coca cola from time to time, but I strive to maintain a balanced diet. It can be done. You just have to put effort, thought, and planning into it...

No. It is a fact that the frozen is cheaper. Why the hell do you think poor people are buying it? I don't know where you live but here a $3 frozen lasagna is much cheaper than making a homemade one. Sure it may not taste as good but it will feed kids.

I am not sure what world you are living in but lasagna done homemade and right cost me around $25 and up. This is the big pan of it. Of course quality lasagna has some stuff that the frozen does not.

But still it is cheaper to buy frozen. Same with frozen chicken. You can buy a box of frozen chicken for $4 and you swould never be able to buy it fresh unless you only wanna eat wings or something.

Agree. I will say this: I need to start taking more effort in reguards to what I put in my body. I admit to eating fast food and after working? I am lazy as hell. I also buy junk at the store but am really gonna make a serious effort these next few months to eat better. I also need to get back to my walking. I have been slacking since Dec. and well I can tell it. I will never be some health or exercise freak (as in lives for it) but I need to get back to the Earth and Nature. BTW, I am not anywhere near obese: I am 5'8 or maybe 5'7 heh and weigh around 155-160 pounds right now. Maybe some would view me as fat but whatever.

I am very excited about this community garden thing and some of us have plans on weekends to walk at the local highschool track. I will do this on top of walking around my where I live a few times around the block. I actually walked aroound for an hour this evening and felt so wonderful. See I been stuck in a rut or something and just been not enjoying things. But I am gonna get ME back! Anyways this is not about me but you are so right. You can even take small steps to eat more healthy and the key is to get your ass moving.

Good luck... I am totally with you on this and I will be your cheerleader... go for it... join My Home | dailymile and find some other people who also exercise and they will form a wonderful support group for you...

people who degrade others becasue of their physical appearance are very insecure. it's natural for those types of people to tease "the little fatty" so they can make themselves feel better.

In my family, teasing is far less offensive than being direct about your concerns about a family member's health. It isn't about making oneself feel better when its coming from people who care about you, unless you're dealing with a complete asshole. I consider it highly effective on people who a slight weight problem, or who are beginning to let themselves go.

Teasing someone who is well past warning and is full blown obese is wrong IMO though, at that point a truly concerned loved one would cut straight to the point. "Dude, you need to hit the gym daily starting now... and no I don't want to go in on a pizza."

It is true, Communique. My experience as a penny pincher, as well as the 20 books I've read on frugality and saving money show that fresh "organic" foods are indeed more expensive. Fast food is cheap, as well as junk food. As food became more easily processed throughout the decades, an obesity problem ensued. Not only that, but corn fuel has increased food costs. You should read the food section of a book titled "be thrifty... not cheap". Processed food is cheaper, less healthy, and bad for your health. Take this from an avid frugal person.

It's been like 2 weeks. Maybe he's thin by now. What if he's all babe magnet?
