The Ryan/Republican Budget - 2012 elections

w will this budget affect the 2012 election?

Republicans stand alot, though, to contrast their Medicare changes with the Presidents' plan. Both propose to cut Medicare expenditures, but Republicans should emphasize that they would give future retirees the ability to choose where their Medicare dollars go; whereas the President would have an unnaccountable board make one-size-fits-all cutting decisions and imposing them on all seniors starting tomorrow. Republicans save Medicare for future generations, whereas the President puts that duty onto a panel that he pretty-promises to appoint... in 2014.

I don't know how successful it would be, given that Democrats tend to "own" the entitlement issues and Republicans don't take as naturally to the "my opponent wants to murder sick children and the elderly" schtick as Democrats do.... but hey, this is a time of change in such sea conditions, and attitudes about which party can be trusted on the entitlements and the economy may be changing.

Too funny....the single largest repudiation since the 40's :)

Yes, let's spin that :)

So school me kids...how can we spend like this and stay afloat...don't bother with anybody's "fair share" crap either.

We cant but Tax cutting the rich and corporations down to nothing while making the middle class pay off the debt isnt going to float either

CPwill the problem the republicans are going to have is not with their cutting spending, its not with their making the middleclass that can afford it pay more, its their attack on the working class and their pursuit to have the wealthiest and corporations pay the least possible while take the most they can off me and others like me.
My congressman must be getting hammered over the ryan plan..hes having his second town hall meeting and hes sending LONG LONG emails that sound like hes almost begging us to believe the ryan plan is a good plan.

i'm unaware of any such assault. are they gunning working people down in the streets? perhaps they are putting in legislation that forbids folks with working class parents from attaining government positions?

however, 6 out of 10 households recieve more from the Federal Government than they pay in taxes. you just plain don't reduce the deficit without changing that math.

and their pursuit to have the wealthiest and corporations pay the least possible while take the most they can off me and others like me.

evil, evil republicans, wanting you to have a job. why, the nerve of them.

oh wait, are you referncing the non-existant "tax cuts" in the Ryan plan?

yup, Republicans took a pretty big risk deciding to be the party that went first in acting like adults. Unfortunately, Democrats seem more interested in seizing what political advantage they can from Republicans making that risky move than they do in following suit. Now we get to see if the American people are fundamentally adults, or if we will bang our sippy cups and scream for endless goodies.

actually, the middle class is where the money is. seems counterintuitive, i know. But you could tax everyone that makes $100,000 at a rate of 100% and still not balance this year's budget, much less when our boomers really crash the entitlements.

past politicians of both parties wrote American's a series of bad checks  we don't have to like it, but that's the reality - we have promised more than we have the ability to pay. ergo, we must pay less than we have promised. the entitlements are largely aimed at the middle class, and so they will feel the pain of it.

welcome to fiscal reality.

You know precisely the assault im talking about, Walker, Christie, Kasich, Scott to name a few...attacking public workers...Many of whom are lifelong republicans no matter who their union endorsed.

Ive had jobs all my life and im not one that doesnt pay taxs...

The people that you say collect more from the govt than pay in taxs...SO WHAT.. a nam vet that gets a certain percentage disability a month plus may have been a cop or firefighter or teacher for 30 years and who is over 62 is most certainly going to collect more from the govt than they pay...but they arent getting it for free...they gave a piece of their ass for their country, they provided a service to YES even the rich mutts that want them raped now so they dont have to pay taxs and they WERE FORCED with no choice but to pay into social security for 40-45 yrs...your whine falls on my deaf ears cpwill.
The taxs the corportations and rich cheat the govt out of yearly is more than enough to cover all those people that actually worked for a living all their lives....like GE i notice you dont like to mention GE lol
Hopefully you and yours will never need to but if you do dont call 911 call turtledude and Paul Ryan to come save your ass :) this way you dont have pay any taxs for pensions

public unions =/= general working Americans. most public union members have compensation packages and job security that most working class Americans only dream of, and they get those compensation packages and job security off the backs of those regular working stiffs.

which is probably why unions are losing their grip on power. increasingly, their enemy is not big business, but the general citizenry.

Ive had jobs all my life and im not one that doesnt pay taxes.

good for you?

The people that you say collect more from the govt than pay in taxs...SO WHAT..

the fact that those people number 6 out of 10 households indicates that we have gone past the point of sustainability. you can't change our current fiscal situation (headed at top speed towards suicide) without changing that math.

you are free to pick out the most emotional situation you choose. heck, make that nam vet a single parent supporting multiple orphans and caring for his sick parents while dealing with the fact that he lost his legs serving his country... it doesn't change the fact whatsoever that we have to reform our entitlement system. now, the Republican plan is to start means-testing them, so that the wealthy get less and the poor get more. I can get behind that. but simply saying you "deserve" social security because you paid into it is actually legally incorrect.

The taxs the corportations and rich cheat the govt out of yearly is more than enough to cover all those people that actually worked for a living all their lives

actually they don't and they can't. and certainly we can't try to make them without crashing the economy and screwing everybody.

....like GE i notice you dont like to mention GE lol

on the contrary; one of the things i like most about the Republican budget is that it closes all those loopholes so that corporations and the wealthy actually pay their taxes. that's how they manage to lower rates while achieving revenue neutrality (as was suggested by the President's Debt Reduction Commission)

You wouldnt know what a real nam vet is.

i only see one whiner here, and it's the guy kvetching about the fact that cuts are now necessary to avoid fiscal meltdown.

and better yet by all means get rid of ALL PUBLIC WORKERS fire them all no one needs them right ?

we certainly don't need all that we have.

and while your at it have your hero' send more jobs to china so theres even less jobs and more americans underpaid and out of work

actually free trade is good for employment here in the states as it lowers the cost of living for the rest of us and allows the readjustment of capital to more productive uses.

so we can get this revolution over with sooner

call it the conservative fix of the New Deal. Just like we did with Welfare, now we have to fix the other Great Liberal Social Programs as well.

You wouldnt know what a real nam vet is.

i was raised with them. taught by them. i have two for mentors, and one for a father-in-law. as I am in the military now, I have met many more of them coming and going. your descent into blind emotion doesn't shine a very positive light on your side.

As usual the Democrats are all about attacking bills, and not solving any problems. But then symbolism over substance has been the hallmark of their party of 70 years, aside from giving away other people's money.

welcome to fiscal reality.

Maybe in right wing fantasy land it is reality.

The REAL reality is that taxes must go up.. across the board. You need more income. You have some of the lowest taxes in the world.
The REAL reality is that cost must come down ... across the board, but particularly in healthcare and defence.

That is the reality and as it stands now the GOP and friends only think about cuts, and as usual the defence industry gets a free pass. Like it or not defence is 33% of the budget and full of waste and corruption. Instead they focus on privatising healthcare, the biggest cost problem there is.. the only reason that Medicaid/care is in trouble, is that the US healthcare system is based on profit and is mostly private, and that has driven up costs year after year, far far higher than the rate of inflation or wages. Cut off the private healthcare industries ability to monopolize and exploit the market as they do now, and then you already there have done a great thing to make Medicaid/care workable. But here it is ideology that comes into the picture and derails everything.

And the GOP and taxes.. they are against it. But the reality of the situation is that the GOP and the Dems have created a tax system that benefits only the rich and does not pull in enough revenue to pay for the things that everyone wants. When the countries top 5 American owned companies pay NO taxes or very little, then you know you have a serious problem. When the worlds 3rd richest man pays less taxes than his secretary then you know you got a problem. You need revenue pure and simple if you want to fund roads, your wars, your veterans, your legal system, your police system, your poor and your elderly which like it or not, paid into the SS and deserve a return.

Like it or not, the reality of the situation is, that the US needs a full "reboot" on taxes and spending, but no politician has the balls to say or do so. They are all defending their money-backers interests and living on the fact that the greenback is the reserve currency in the world. This wont last and when the fall does come it will effect everyone in the US, and around the world. It will make Ireland and Greece look like a picnic.

What this pretty boy Ryan did was 100% based on ideology rather on reality and sane thinking. He for one did not knowledge in anyway that the reason Medicare/aid is a "problem" is the price rises in the private healthcare system. Anyone can see this reality.. but of course the GOP.

You whine in every one of your posts and lets get this straight NONE of the cuts effect me personally....I am quite comfortable

we certainly don't need all that we have.

You have no clue what we need, like I said get rid of ALL of them in a couple of years there will be alot less YOU's

Yeah I know CPwill tell me anything...when confronted all the rich wave flags and tell us some of their best friends are combat vets, when the real truth is you get up everyday and see who you can screw out of a dime and dont give the kids in iraq or afghanistan a single thought till someone mentions it and Out pops your little hand held flag for the moment...smirk

project much?

I project when I feel its necessary you project in every post the same redundant teaparty brat cheers..

Truth.

It's part of the psychology of the parties - tied, for example, to their propensity to "fall in love" with their leaders. Obama was a perfect fit for the Democratic party - all style, no substance, but ooh boy was he pretty.

You whine in every one of your posts and lets get this straight NONE of the cuts effect me personally....I am quite comfortable

the only time I'm aware of me whining in posts is when i was promised a spanking by a lovely british lass who then failed to deliver. :D and she was a hottie - and damn straight i whined about that.

You have no clue what we need, like I said get rid of ALL of them in a couple of years there will be alot less YOU's

well yes, obviously if we fired every single federal employee we would be short quite a few active-duty Marines. but you are constructing a strawman - nobody says we should fire all of our federal employees.

Yeah I know CPwill tell me anything...when confronted all the rich wave flags and tell us some of their best friends are combat vets, when the real truth is you get up everyday and see who you can screw out of a dime and dont give the kids in iraq or afghanistan a single thought till someone mentions it and Out pops your little hand held flag for the moment...smirk

i'm not even sure what this post is supposed to mean. i'm an Iraqi vet. Never been to Afghanistan, that was part of the deal with the wife when we reenlisted. I wanted to go (many of my friends and peers went), but two deployments in three years had left her basically a single mother for our first tour; and she was dead certain she wasn't going to do it again any time soon (and she more than deserved that from me).

I project when I feel its necessary you project in every post the same redundant teaparty brat cheers..

yup. I called that about right. though it's also sort of funny that you evidently have no idea what I'm talking about.

wait, unless you are an evil clown imposter, on here to make our left-leaning brethren look bad?

I think this is largely going to depend on what the Democrats do.

I think if they actually legitimately tackle medicare/medicaid and/or Social Security in a truly substantive way that admits these things are broken and need some significant reform beyond simply "Raise taxes on the top 5%!!!!!", and they move forward with that along with some kind of significant deficit reducing budget then it could be harmful to republicans.

I think if they punt again, act like the things aren't broken or just need a bandaid, think that raising a tax is going to magically fix it all or just saying "we'll tackle waste and fraud!" is actually a fix then I think you're looking at either a wash or a significant boon for Republicans depending on what way the public wind is blowing at that time.

Whether you agree with it or not, this will mark the second time this decade where Republicans have significantly and greatly attempted to address the issues with our entitlement programs that are going to bankrupt this country on their current path while we have had no real, honest, and substantive suggestions coming from the Democrats. Does that mean Ryan's plan should absolutely happen, or is the best? No. But this is one of those cases where I think enough people realize there's something wrong here and aren't going to want to penalize one side for at least TRYING if the other sides doing jack and **** beyond punting.

It has to be done though, the spending on it will get even worse if something isn't done.
They basically have 1 choice, cut benefits one way or another.
We could be going the "death panels" route

Saying there has to be change is alot different from saying there has to be this change. Cp uses that argument alot too, and it is a total failure. We all know Medicare is a problem that has to be solved. This solution however is a total failure of a solution. A much better solution is to work on the causes of the rapidly escalating medical costs, which will help across the board.

That is the most hilarious spin on telling seniors that they will be lucky to afford health care in the future I have ever heard.

Depending on who you ask, Medicare is the problem.
Art Laffer did a study on it that concluded as Medicare being one of the major drivers in medical cost inflation.

Aside from that, the government already sets reimbursement rates for each procedure and most of the claims are processed through automation, almost all 1.2 billion of them.

As every other country has found, end of life care costs the most, we could place a hard cap of $50k on each elderly person to curb costs, like many single payer countries do.
They would be spun out to be "death panels" by either party that didn't institute it.

Again, yes there is a problem, and again, acknowledging that does not by default mean that you support this proposal, nor that this proposal is the best one.

Personally I don't care as long as it's cut.
I'm not expecting a reasonable plan to get through Congress on any budget subject.

Depends on how observant and/or fatigued the American people are. As the American people are sentimentally populist and perceive Wall-Street as privileged - a source of a lot of ire against the "pro-corporation" Obama stimulus, and one which the Republicans cautiously employed against him - any significant reduction in their benefits with no losses incurred on the part of the wealthy naturally plays into the Democrats' hands. However, at this time the American people might be too tired to care about the Republicans' Wall-Street sympathies, which coupled with Ryans' popularity and the still somewhat energetic Tea Party might be enough to disarm any indignation the Democrats could rouse against the bill.

I strongly dislike their ideology, platform, and character, but I have to acknowledge their resourcefulness: if there's a time for the Republicans to take drastic action and break their image as the "party of no" while incurring minimal losses to their power and influence, now's it.

How will this budget affect the 2012 election?

  • It will help Obama/Democrats
  • It will help Republicans
  • Don't know
  • No change

The effect will likely be minimal. Tea party members may like the budget better than others, but overall, most who look at it won't. It's that constant disconnect among voters who want programs but don't want to pay for them.

Assuming they use it properly, this will absolutely help democrats. All they need to do is advertise what is actually in the bill.

If they stop lying about what's in the bill, it will help the Republicans.

If they stop lying about what's in the bill, it will help the Republicans.

No need to lie about it for it to hurt republicans. Just point to Medicare changes. Just point to the changes to tax code.
