I want it as long as it's very thoroughly thought out and doesn't work the the UN. If there is going to be a world government it needs to be strong.

The biggest thing going against a democratic world government is, your vote will be worth way less than it is now.
That and more culturally similar "former" nations can form majority voting blocks that could repress the rest of the people.

Can't for the life of me think of one positive upside to having a controlling World Government.

(although i could see where those "world elections" would be a hoot to watch/track....;))

.

Sure...as long as its based on our constitution and everyone follows our rules and we mandate that everyone works to the level of their capability and no free handout programs and...and we can force everyone into compliance...and...

wait...this isnt ever going to work...

When there is as little difference between London and Bejing as there is between New York and Los Angeles, a benevolent world government might be feasible. Until that far-distant and improbable day, no.

I'd be comfortable with a world government whose purview was limited to regulating or overseeing the interactions of member nations. Anything beyond that and you risk compromising sovereignty -- resulting either in codified colonialism or war.

There's plenty of difference between New York and some backwoods hick town in Alabama, that doesn't stop a national government from existing and being perfectly feasible. What's the difference, except for scale?

No, a world government is a horrible idea, because people are so different and it serves no practical purpose. Muslim countries would like to put homosexuals behind bars, to have international laws which could prosecute anyone that insult islam, but not the other way of course. China and North Korea would like to force their communistic ideas on other countries. Europe would like to force all countries to abolish death penalty and would love if their hate speech laws got imposed on the US.

We already got EU, and even though it is a democracy. It does not feel like it. Because people tend to vote in the same politicans as national elections and they don't know what policies they got. Even if you win in your country, it is still not going to make a difference at the international stage. A world government is going to be a lot worse than EU and is just going to force us to do a lot of things we don't want. Why would we want that? I support self-governship. It's not up to the international community to decide if US is going to have death penalty or not. It is up to the American people to decide that.

I'm all for trade deals, WHO, WTO, NATO, etc. but participation is voluntary, not mandatory like a world government. Secondly these organization is about mutual gain. A world government will just represent the majority of politicans which will include people such as Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, Kim Jong il, Robert Mugabe, Hugo Chávez pluss lots of corrupt leaders. The majority of politicans will impose their will on the rest of the world. You can't limit their power either, becase a world government can give themselves more power. EU did it, and so did the US federal government. The world order will do the same.

Way down the road I definitely can imagine the uses and importance of a strong worldly political figure. Communication and transportation are definitely an issue, I believe, but a move like this will be met with blood as well as scared, unreliable, and ignorant human resistance.

Which ever nation blessed (or cursed) with the governing power will be met with national security problems within the first week.

Apart from the probable World War to follow, at this point; I agree with the notion of a worldly democratic sovereign.

Unfortunately the ideals of others will be determined by the theoretical sovereign of the world. That itself is why I believe the world will be met with blood if something were to happen, but. on the contrary, I agree with the power and potential of an established world republic. I just hope to never see what the government is met with upon it's arrival.

While I'm fairly certain Revelations is largely allegorical and intended as parable; let's just say that the notion of giving a single entity ultimate power gives me the heeby jeebies.

I voted no. I don't want the rest of the world having oversight of my life, and I am not capable of telling someone halfway across the world how they should live theirs.

Nothing but arrogance can be inferred from the thought that we have the ability to govern ourselves on a world stage.
I can see how enacting world misery would be good.

When facing an alien invasion that requires global cooperation to build a space navy to fight off the alien bastards, I don't see another choice.

If aliens could make it this far, their mostly plausible intention would probably be exploration.
Getting our natural resources is dumb because all of those are abundant in other empty planets and if the have the technology to get here, they can pull gas, ice and other things to convert them to usable materials.

Just my take on it.

If you are religious, you don't want the Antichrist ruling over you. LOL.

But what if they are genocidal maniacs who are following a religious view that only their race is allowed to live Genesis Rising type of deal? I never actually played it but I heard it was decent.

Well, we have Will Smith and Jeff Goldbloom and in reserve we have Sigourney Weaver, Arnold and Danny Glover.

Aliens won't know what hit em.

I like it when people think about our lot and try to figure a better system.

I'm concerned about having a world government that would be difficult to over throw. I'm concerned about any government that can't be tossed out by the people.

Great point. Hadn't really considered the "alien invasion" angle.

Ok. I'm on board. When do we vote.....??

NAh...still wouldnt work. We saw how well that united under one goal thing lasted in the US in the months following 9-11. People will ALWAYS look for ways to make political gains.

(and yeah...I recognize and fully appreciate the joking nature of the thought)

If only we can figure how they managed to become all united in Star Trek and how they put aside human nature, choice, greed, lust for power (while maintaining lust for green women) etc...

Plus, if they got here, and they were indifferent about our well being, chances are there would be zilch we could do about it. I believe the only way we will ever meet aliens is if they are interested in being friends. Otherwise, they will take whatever they want and we won't ever really understand what hit us.

Terrible idea. Why would anyone want a world gov?

Bring guns, we'll wait for you.

I am a proponent of world government.

I am what I would call a "Humanist" or "Globalist".

It is my belief that eventually humanity must unite on this Earth or we will fail and die out as a species.

How to achieve planetary government?

Well it is my belief that it will take time, ALOT of time. The nations of the Earth must reach a relative equal status in order to be able to unite into a world federal government.

Now if you're some American "AMERICA USA #1 don't take my soveriegnty away" person then don't bother discussing this subject with me, your emotions on the subject are irrelevent.

Soveriegnty will be a finicky subject at the opening stages of World Government. But it is my belief when I say the Earth will reach an equal status, that technology and the creation of unlimited electrical production will eliminate most of our needs and allow us to pursue our wants. But that's another story all together.

The structure would essentially make countries "Provinces" or "states" under a planetary government who's mandate it would be to provide peace and security in the world. Meaning that if there's a problem in Ivory Coast, then a planetary detachment would be sent to sort it out.

But that leads me to my next point. To actually be part of what I have coined as the "World Union" you would have to meet a set of criteria. Habeous corpous, democratic institutions, the allowance of free and fair elections and so on and so forth... those would be the conditions of entry.

And it is my belief that with all these nations forming together into a United Coalition of World Nations pursuing the idea of a United. Free. Fair. Just and Democratic Earth, that all other nations who were not originally part of the World Union would eventually become part of it, leading to world government who's job it would be to simply look out for the interests of Humanity and not nessecarily decree to a child in Peru that he must Learn Eskimo Poetry about Alaska...

Of course any institution created by humans has the ability to be broken down, destroyed or twisted.

But it is my belief that one day the borders shall dissolve, and humanity shall realise that this great planet is too small for us, and we shall then go out... and seek broad, bright new worlds.

This is a very thin explanation of the things I wish to see, I am actually in the process of writing a manifesto on the subject, and I believe it's actually a workable plan.

That's the word. I stick to it.
