No it isn't. The League wanted to send a message that they will not tolerate players making such comments to their refs. And it wasn't simply swearing. It was a completely uncalled for insult to a ref's sexual preferences.

You really expect a bunch of goons to conduct themselves as gentlemen ?
Considering their pay (far, far too much), I think I might...

When will this madness ever end ???
At this point in time, I think the fine was appropiate...
The pro teams and colleges must upgrade their "image"
    The goons must go !

Apparently, Kobe is deciding to appeal the decision.

Full Disclosure: I am a huge Kobe Bryant fan and I think he is one of the greatest players to ever play the game, and is currently the greatest player still active.

However. He needs to stop being a bitch. You said something that was uncalled for, now take responsiblity for your actions and pony up. 100k is chump change for the highest paid player in the league.
Nobody who wins a war indulges in a bifurcated definition of victory. War is a political act; victory and defeat have meaning only in political terms. A country incapable of achieving its political objectives at an acceptable cost is losing the war, regardless of battlefield events.

Bifurcating victory (e.g. winning militarily, losing politically) is a useful salve for defeated armies. The "stab in the back" narrative helped take the sting out of failure for German generals after WWI and their American counterparts after Vietnam.

All the same, it's nonsense. To paraphrase Vince Lombardi, show me a political loser, and I'll show you a loser.

See I have to hate Kobe based on principle, but that is just because of him being a Laker and me being a Celtics fan. However he said on ESPN, which I found funny, that you just appeal it because it is what you do in situations like this.

I think there's some truth to this. It's really hard for us to know the real Kobe Bryant as a person, though because he hides behind a carefully crafted media image especially when he's doing pressers and interviews.

This isn't about the legality of Kobe Bryant's gay slur. This is simply a debate as to whether or not you agree the fine was appropriate, and whether you think what he said was a big deal or if it is being blown out of proportion.
I can understand why the league is doing what it is doing. However, when the mics capture sound, how often are people penalized for throwing out the s-word or the f-word?

Oh, you have no idea how serious this is. Trust me. It's a big thing in the Mental Health community, and nearly as big in the Special Education field. Everyone seems to be gung-ho about it.

little excessive... i think it would be different if he made a huge scene and said it for the entire world to hear, then yea it would be appropriate. I think the fine should be reduced drastically, and maybe a public apology.

I'm not...word has a nice ring to it and I feel it gets the point across and better communicates the message, lol.

"Goons"? Christ, man, have you seen the way most people play sports? It's certainly the same tension.
