Well it WAS a regular season game, not a playoff game (playoffs started today, this was a few days ago).

I assume the fine was so high because he had actually been caught on camera and the league wanted to do some damage control...if the cameras had completely missed it who knows what would've happened.
Nobody who wins a war indulges in a bifurcated definition of victory. War is a political act; victory and defeat have meaning only in political terms. A country incapable of achieving its political objectives at an acceptable cost is losing the war, regardless of battlefield events.

Bifurcating victory (e.g. winning militarily, losing politically) is a useful salve for defeated armies. The "stab in the back" narrative helped take the sting out of failure for German generals after WWI and their American counterparts after Vietnam.

All the same, it's nonsense. To paraphrase Vince Lombardi, show me a political loser, and I'll show you a loser.

Why not? Oh, because he's Kobe and a Laker... the NBA has always treated him and them with kid gloves...

This isn't about the legality of Kobe Bryant's gay slur. This is simply a debate as to whether or not you agree the fine was appropriate, and whether you think what he said was a big deal or if it is being blown out of proportion.
This has nothing to do with political correctness or offending gays.

This has everything to do with the league's image and the appearance of professionalism and good sportsmanship.

This is also why players must dress for business when attending just about any league related event they aren't playing in. Before these rules went into effect, players were dressing and acting like gang-bangers, and their young impressionable fans were following suit.

IMO in so far as political correctness goes, if you're offended by anything, while you have every right to say something about it, you have no right to force compliance. laws creating and prohibiting against hate speech are likewise unconstitutional and should be erased.

To reiterate, however, this is about corporate image, not political correctness.

Maybe the fine itself wasn't about political correctness. But IMO the media hype surrounding this whole incident certainly was.

Well yeah because the media is always looking for a way to sensationalize "oh noes teh poor ghayz zomg". Defending homosexuality is in style right now given the upcoming election cycle. It's about ratings, not substance, I agree.

Just remember, professional sports players are the rich, so by default they're going to be villainized unless they quit, join the Army and give their life.

See that would be a real smart thing to do, because a lot of mags and other media would love to get that interview. He could play this to his advantage.

Actually I have a second thought on the subject.....I think he should do 30 minutes on ESPN talking about what led him to the decision to act out and why he is going to be ok with paying the fine.

he has done a couple of interviews on the subject, not sure if they lasted 30 minutes though.
