Nobody who wins a war indulges in a bifurcated definition of victory. War is a political act; victory and defeat have meaning only in political terms. A country incapable of achieving its political objectives at an acceptable cost is losing the war, regardless of battlefield events.

Bifurcating victory (e.g. winning militarily, losing politically) is a useful salve for defeated armies. The "stab in the back" narrative helped take the sting out of failure for German generals after WWI and their American counterparts after Vietnam.

All the same, it's nonsense. To paraphrase Vince Lombardi, show me a political loser, and I'll show you a loser.

    Hmmm...

    A good question.

I've had my fair share of times where I've had no sleep, but ironically due to drinking.

Drinking has the opposite effect on me then it does other people, especially when I was drinking heavily.

Heavy, prolonged drinking had me going to bed at 3AM and waking up at 8AM ready to go (with a headache but energetic and not able to get back to sleep).

So when I was drinking alot I'd stay up sometimes for a couple of days at most.

This is a fact. I only sleep about 4 hours a night. Been that way for a couple of years. I do business overseas and I am always availible. You will notice I am on here most the time. I have gotten used to it. There has been times that I have been up 3 days plus. Not that long ago actually. People are amazed but I can't help it. I always joke that there is plenty of time to rest when I die.
I had a friend once say to me "hey you have a lot in common with Einstien. He only slept about four hours a night." I said that is about the only thing I have in common with him. He said "No, He was a crap speller too"

Re: Longest Time Period you have gone without Sleep

I have gone many days after only getting an hour or two of sleep before having to go on watch or just start my day. Even did some 30+ hour days just because I couldn't get to sleep.

But the one day I remember the most, I had the morning watch, 0630-1130. We were also pulling into Australia that day, and I had duty. My duty day meant 2 6 hour watches, 1330-1930 and 0130-0730, and I had to paint some areas in my workspace. My duty watches were in 1 plant but my workspace is 2 plant, which meant that I had to paint inbetween my watches. On top of this, I was the duty section leader for my division that day too, which means I had to make sure everyone else got their assignments done as well as my own work. I went the entire duty day without sleep. Then, since we were in Australia, the first time for me, I didn't want to miss out, so I got off the ship after I getting relieved from watch and dressed in civvies and went out with some of my friends for the day. I ended up falling asleep in one of the bars we went to that night around 9 or 10 surrounded by alcohol (of which, I only actually drank maybe one drink). The pic from that was priceless. Everyone swears I must have been drunk. In total, I was up about 39 or 40 hours til I finally got to sleep at all. And even that sleep got interrupted after less than an hour to move to another bar.

Re: Longest Time Period you have gone without Sleep

Stamina and longevity are not my strong traits (maybe why im single ) and this includes sleep. 38ish hours is about the max I have ever remained awake and Im pretty useless after about 18 hours of no sleep.
