Is shutting down the federal government an advantage?

Please explain your vote.

Past federal and state government shutdowns have been to the detriment of the legislature and to the advantage of the executive. Example: 1975, Clinton came out politically stronger. There's no advantage to the legislative branch members and causes. The executive benefits by appearing to be more reasonable than the rest.

I don't care which side gets political points. I want the government shut down for at least two months. I can think of nothing better for the average working taxpayers of America.

Shut it down!

My family would have very little income if the government shut down, so it's not a good thing for me, and I don't see how it could be an advantage to anyone in general.

Every notice when the governmetn workers have a paid holiday not afforded to the private sector, how light the traffic is, just think of the money, gas etc we are saving.

I'd like some proof to back that up please?

@ the OP: Unless you want to go to the National Park, then a federal shutdown means nothing.

Proof go take a drive on a Governmet paid holiday, my proof is that it takes 1.45 hours to drive 26 miles on a regular day, on the days the governmet has one of it's hack holidays it takes 25 minutes. This would be Exit 43 to Exit 25 on I-95 in Boston.

BTW I drive for a living and 110,000 plus miles per year depending, interstate driving (regional) for 25 years now..

Oh, how sad...............................not.

Tell your family to get off their dead asses and go get a job. Please don't tell me there are none. Make up one then. But stop crying about it.

Shut it down!

How would a government shutdown be an advantage for the American people? Please explain...

We get two social security checks, one is for my retired grandparent, and the other is for my disabled parent, so before you look anymore like a fool, don't be so judgmental.

These government paid holidays you speak of are also honored by the financial industry and other economic sectors not just government. Schools being closed means students aren't traveling to classes. People aren't traveling to the DMV and passport offices, etc. Your ‘proof’ doesn't prove anything.

Not here in new england on the east coast, such as evacutation day, patriots day, columbus day etc.

I am moderately concerned that shutting down the government would be a willful violation of the law. Failing to fund mandatory spending programs and staff mandatory spending programs comes across as a dereliction of duty.

I don't even get a social security check.

Sounds to me like more private sector workers need to unionize to demand more paid holidays.

Sounds to me like we need to invest in more and better public transportation to alleviate the traffic congestion.

Sounds like a fine idea and believe me it has been proposed and is now tied up in the courts, you see those who are suing are probably those who sit in the traffic. The suit brought forth are done by the surrounding towns, the residents have their numerous reasons but non the less this will not happen for decades. Of course there is a easy way, just lay off all the government workers;)

Shutting down the federal gov would be a terrible thing. Many people who need money would not be able to get it. Many employees would not be paid. And I see no advantage to shutting down the federal government.

Yeah, because it not like instead all those government workers will just find private employment and instead of them clogging up the roads to get to their government job they'll just be clogging up the roads to get to their private sector job.

LOL..you do make a good point here, but as long as they go northbound and not south..it would be fine with me:)

No proof here beyond anecdotal though I'm sure I could search for some V-Dot records. But I would stake my life on the suggestion that in the DC Metro Area where I live, Traffic is significantly improved on Federal Holidays. My wife's average commute is 45 minutes during the summer, an hour during the school year, and 30 minutes on a federal holiday.

Then again, the DC Metro area has likely the largest concentration of Government workers of any city in the country so its not surprising.

To start, full disclosure, I am a federal employee.

My hope is for a budget to be passed with a cut in spending. Preferably I'd want even more than Republicans are suggesting, but at least some kind of decent level of cuts.

However...

I'd rather the government shut down than it continue to go forward with these temporary measures time after time after time. The CR's are immobilizing work forces and actually WASTING money as agencies scramble to use what little money it gives them for immediete benefit because the uncertainty of the situation makes it impossible to use it with any kind of forethought or long term planning.

I would rather see the government shut down, forcing the politicians in Congress to actually get something done in some form rather than continue to slap a bandaid on the issue. I most certainly would hope that its for something closer to 2 weeks than 2 months however.

Then make more holidays... Some people need the post office and IRS to be open, and other people on medicare/medicade are still going to need to go to the doctor. I am pretty sure when the government reopens, they are just going to have to issue back checks and refunds.

There are people who have jobs that will be affected if the government shuts down... Contractors, lawyers, and CPAs for one, probably the healthcare field too
