    Another Abortion?

Will the NY Times succeed this time with charging readers?

I don't see it because they are not simply purveyors, but are at the forefront of journOlism. Their brand is damaged and they offer nothing that cannot be had elsewhere free on the internet.

I say this is going to be a second abortion for them.

NY Times begins charging online readers

By Chris Lefkow (AFP) 8 hours ago

WASHINGTON The New York Times began charging online readers Monday for full access to its website and dangled a heavily discounted introductory offer intended to lure its first digital subscribers.

The Times is offering its three digital subscription plans for the same price of 99 cents for the first four weeks.

After that, unlimited access to NYTimes.com and the newspaper's smartphone application will cost $15 for four weeks while full access to the website and a tablet computer application will cost $20 for four weeks.

In September 2007, The Times aborted a two-year experiment with making readers pay for full access to NYTimes.com called TimesSelect.

The News Corp.-owned Wall Street Journal is currently the only major US newspaper charging readers for unlimited access to its website and other US publishers have been waiting for the Times to unveil its online plan.

This is just a reaction to people buying less, and less newspapers. They have to try and make money somehow, though I doubt this will work, people aren't willing to accept paying to view a website. They need to find another way to generate revenue, or they will go out of business.

The only way that an online newspaper is going to be able to successfully keep charging people is if they ALL (the news media) started charging. People will just go for whats free before paying. Unless a specific paper has something specific for the reader that they can't get elsewhere.

This is the key. The wall street journal charges for some of its internet content, and I would say it has been succesful.
