I've made online friends before and met them in person, and there is a stark contrast between the way they talk to people online and the way they talk to them in person.

A lot of people say things online that they would never dare say in person because there is anonymity on the internet. So I'm curious to see how people vote here.

God question. I "sort of" talk the way I would in person only with regards to people here that I like, or that I debate respectfully. I would talk to you (at least so far) or CC or catz or a ton of others with the sarcasm and negative sounding funny things in person, no question. I feel like I could easily be friends with many people here. I would never talk to people that I insult "for real" as I have been, because once I establish that they are as stupid as I think that they are, or as obtuse, or partisan or whatever... I simply don't interact with them AT ALL. There are people like that in our real lives, at work, and I am never rude, I just smile, say hi and excuse myself from them and move onto to people our things that are enjoyable. I don't waste time in the negative, in RL, like I do here in the Basement, for instance.

I try to use my own voice. I also know that nobody can see my twinkling eyes or the smile I'm wearing....so sometimes I try to put that into words. You know, words I wouldn't have to use if I were talking face-to-face. I use a lot of bold fonts and underlines because we don't talk in a flat tone...we emphasize certain words. If I hear me emphasizing the word in my head...I'll emphasize it in my post. I think it makes what I'm saying clearer.

I'm probably bolder on this forum than I'd be in real life. Nah. Not probably, I'm sure I am. I'd be more circumspect with my opinions in person. But, then, we're on a debate site -- and debating calls for strong opinions -- so I really don't see anything wrong with that.

I try to be polite and am mostly quiet with strangers, in person.
I like to observe people and get to know who they are, before I reveal myself to them.
If I chose to.

When it comes to politics, I typically refuse to discuss it with others in person.

I tend to be pretty direct, so I think it's safe to say that if someone said to my face the kinds of things that get said to me here, I'd respond in person pretty much the same way I do here.

My rule, generally speaking, is not to be rude to strangers until they open that door and make politeness either impossible or impractical.

I think I'm pretty much the same person. Only difference is I usually don't debate things I'm not very informed on in person, while online I can just look things up.

I don't call people names online, and I don't do it in person... The only time I get nasty online is when somebody is acting like an idiot, being rude to me, won't admit they are wrong, etc. and it just really aggregates me. I do get annoyed at people in real life when they act unreasonably stupid too. The only difference is, in real life, I don't argue with those people as much. :)

Sort of. My responses in an online debate tend to be more cogent and well-reasoned than in a real-life argument, because I have time to compose my thoughts before sharing them. I also tend to be more rude to people that are rude to me or just flat-out idiotic online. Whereas in real life, I would most likely just avoid interaction with them as much as possible, I tend not to do so online.

I tell a lot more jokes in person because I talk quite a bit faster than I type. I'm also ruder and cruder in person because I don't have the "edit" option when I talk.

There are certain curse words I say online that I would never say in front of my mama, daddy or other elders:) Other than that? I would talk same way to pretty much anybody.

I'm the same. The only difference between my online self and my 'in real time' self - is that typing responses and communication on the internet allows for re-consideration of wording and implied tone. In 'real time' there is no lag and a person is 'live'. I actually think I'd come across much better in person than I do here or anywhere else online.

I'm not rude to people when I'm face to face unless they are being an ass... and the same goes for online interactions. I'm a very forward and aggressive person in real life and have no qualms speaking my mind when I'm face to face with anyone.

Anyone who has spoken to me over the phone could attest to this.

I actually swear a hell of a lot less online. Seriously. Every other word out of my mouth in real life is ****, ****, or ****.

Much more eloquent and handsome. When words pour from my lips, it is like gold. ;)

For some reason? When typing I seem to drop the f bomb and other curse words a lot more:)

Can't make out that word, Tuck...

****in' A

I said **** the other day around some co-workers, and they were like, "what the ****, did you just ****ing say ****?" and I stated, "**** yeah, I hardly ever ****ing cuss" But you know what? **** is like the new ****...

EDIT: Oh, I guess that the C word is banned like the F word. It should read the C word is the new F word. Not quite the same zing that way though...

That is why you must expound on your words to reach the same meaning, and perhaps gain more points by making it sound more funny. If I wanted to say someone was a successful playboy, I would say something like, "the room is becoming more moist with every glance of a woman."

I'm often as much a goof in person as on the internet. IRL it depends who I am exposed to.

I’m basically the same. The online forum allows me to focus on one issue at a time which helps because, in person I tend to pull a Wikipedia, I can jump from issue to issue. I’m probably more of a joker in person also.

Same here. On a forum you have time to gather your thoughts and present what you want to say fully and without interruptions.
