Manipulation - do you use it regularly

All people have the means to be manipulative in order to get what they want. Whether a person uses it to schmooze a co-worker in covering a shift for them, or manipulating an irate customer to get them to calm down.

How often would you say you manipulate people and what is your motivation MOST times when you consciously manipulate people.

Pretty often. Without even realizing it some of the time.

You know, there's a thing called the power of persuasion. It can be effected pretty honestly by some people. But I think over time I have added certain expressions and responses that work, just unconsciously (maybe consciously too) incorporated them into the system. Seems like I do it a lot, manipulate certain types of people when in person. It doesn't work with everybody.

The motivation is usually to get a desired outcome at work.

Edit: Just checked the poll results, and it appears 3 of the voters are more dishonest than me.

I use it all the time, mainly when I'm at school, because people around me think they're real smart.

I don't manipulate close friends though, unless it really important that they do something they otherwise might not do. If I ever manipulate a friend, I make sure to tell them about it, and thankfully I've never had an instance where it hurt anyone.

We use manipulation all the time. Although the word "manipulation" has a rather negative connotation, it doesn't have to be negative at all. It's called by other names though: good manners; social graces; persuasion; skillful management; strong closing skills (in sales); and I'm sure many others I can't think of right now.

In the negative sense, I think it's most often used by passive-aggressive people to get want they want at the expensive of others. Serious manipulators are sociopaths. I'm not that person. Funny, though, I usually don't recognize it's been done to me (in the negative way) until a bit later in a "transaction." P's me off!!!

I think I always recognize it when its attempted on me. Takes one to know one, I guess. But you can purposely let a manipulator get away with it to the extent that that helps you get what you want in the end. I personally feel I can justify that, though, knowing that my efforts were surely more honest than theirs...

The simple truth of life is that men love women and women love to be loved by men.

    My favorites are:
"Eat your dinner and you can have a soda."
"Clean your room and you can play video games."
"Leave me alone and you can do whatever." <--- /sarcasm :p (although, I wonder who is truly getting manipulated in this situation)

My manipulations are limited to direct persuasion and coercion, I'm not subtle enough for anything else.

That is more bribery than manipulation...
