    I use persuasion.

I can't answer the poll because the way manipulation is being described is not always the case.

There is also such a thing as positive manipulation, to get others to consider doing something that might be good for them, which is the more altruistic side.

The majority of the time that people are being manipulated (like with social rules), they are aware of it and they allow it to happen in order to do what is 'proper'. If people were more direct about what it is they do and don't want, manipulation would not be necessary.

    For instance:
Person A: Are you coming to the party tonight?
Person B: No, I'm really busy and can't make the time.
Person A: You say that every time you get invited. I bet if you come, you'll have a really good time!
Person B: I'm not feeling well either, so I don't think I can make it.

    Alternate conversation:
Person A: Are you coming to the party tonight?
Person B: To be honest, I really don't like going to those big parties. I never seem to have a good time, and I would rather have quiet evenings.
Person A: Okay, I understand. It's just that I want to spend time with you and we don't get to meet up very often these days.
Person B: I know, and sorry about that. Let's schedule a meet up to do something else.

But they almost always do what they are supposed to do. And if they keep on behaving normally they know that their expected pleasantries will be there. In all actuality they will have to eat their dinner if they get a soda or not. They just know they will have more rewards if they behave proper. Sure its a bribe but it's also manipulation.

I'm quite blunt and straight forward - I don't need manipulation (which I suck at, btw) - I just ask ouright or tell things like they are.

Just want to make sure that we agree that it is a bribe...

None of the choices fit me. I am sure I may do it but am unaware of what I doing. Honestly I am just not smart enough to manipluate anything or anyone.

That probably works quite well, but might be considered to be more of an intimidation tactic. I sure hope I got that right <whew!>

Well done, Kali. Start off innocently, then play us like a fiddle. Mad skills at manipulation, you have.
