As an aside, I never liked the idea of using corn ethanol as fuel.

I’m fairly sure that there are other plants you could make fuels out of that don’t have anywhere near the food potential corn does.

And possibly that would produce fuel more efficiently.

Edit: And it may be wishful thinking, but I went with the lowest price on the poll.
My dad farms quite a few acres of corn, and I must say, although E85 benefits farmers like my dad immensely, it isn't nearly as beneficial to everyone else as people thought it would be. This is causing food cost to rise like crazy, especially in the beef market. To top things off, E85 isn't much cheaper, and even if you're saving 20-50 cents lets say, you're losing it in gas mileage, as it isn't better than pure gasoline. Unfortunately, the amount of money invested in ethanol, and ethanol plants will allow it to be around for years to come.

It also catches me striking that in Illinois E-85 is basically the same price as regular gasoline, not much cheaper at all. However, for instance in Iowa when I was there a few months ago I noticed it was significantly cheaper than it was in Illinois, something like 80-90 cents cheaper if I recall correctly? Its ironic since Illinois is the second highest corn producing state.

    Re: Price of gas

It's $4.07 here right now, but California always has more expensive gas because of the additives and additional processing the morons in Sacramento require. It'll probably hit $4.50, then start dropping again.

The near-perfect solution would be to find a different plant that:

    1. Produces more total fuel per acre, at higher quality.
    2. Costs less to grow/process.
    3. Is not a food source (for humans or food animals).
    4. Can be grown in the same areas that corn grows.

Of course, this might cut the amount of corn being produced, but hopefully (mainly because of the acre efficiency) without the impact on the food prices you speak of.

    Now, to find that plant…

    Education.

    Re: Price of gas

Smack dab in the middle of the U.S. (Kansas) the price of gas hit $3.67/gallon. I filled up my van today and it took $94.00 to fill it up.

Yeah. Not going to be able to afford that for long. Too bad everything is so spread out here, otherwise I'd freakin' walk to work.
