I could talk about the politics of Mass Effect all day long

SPOILER ALERT You've been warned.

At the end of Mass Effect 2, I told the Illusive Man to screw off, so there's my answer ;)

Man, I love the Illusive Man. Hey, its a war, and we need someone to unite humanity, one way or another. I'm sure you've seen the trailer of Mass Effect 3 right?

And it would be foolish to assume that only humanity could take down the Reapers. We need an inter-species united front.

Weirdest poll i've made on this forum but i can't stop thinking about it. Basically im playing this game set in the future, where human development takes them beyond our solar system, into different nebula's and galaxies. There are many different types of intelligent life forms from different evolutionary backgrounds and planets that humans inevitably cross paths with. They mingle in our cities and we in theirs, imagine; they can talk like you, learn your language, adapt to your culture, share the same interests as you, have a collective sense on what is right or wrong. They have big cultural differences, different ways of doing or understanding things, the way people did before the days of planes, ships and globalization, before the days of integration right here on Earth.

Yet, although all these races live together, prejudices exist, historic hatred and stereotyping still alive, just like in today's society. Naturally, inter-human race supremacy ideals would shift slowly to human race supremacy in such an event. And even though this galactic society has its tensions, they collectively agree racism is wrong, should be combated and equality promoted, again, like today's world.

But in-game exists an organization called Cerberus. It promotes pro-Human agenda's, sometimes even resulting in violence against other races to ensure its dominance and genetic pool is maintained. It emphasizes on inter-human breeding, human only colonies, independent human political system, military intervention to save human lives only and promotes the importance of the human culture, history and identity over others.

In such a hypothetical world, as a citizen of the galaxy in the world 2100, would you be in favor of lifting racial prejudices of human vs alien, or would you support the Cerberus cause?

Every time i think about what my answer would be, i cant help but think "well, would i be a white supremacist against other human races?". But its different....or did people see it in a similar light back then? Me vs this foreigner who looks nothing like me, who has a different background as me? Will that be the next big step towards a discriminant free society in the distant future? All hypothetically speaking, of course.

A very intresting scenario to discuss, hypothetical though it be. :)

One can argue about differences between human racial or ethnic groups, and whether they are significant. Personally I think that differences in culture are more relevant, and much more real and have a more substantial effect in the real world.

For instance, I have far more in common with a Hindi person who is a 2nd generation American, the child of immigrants from India, than I would with a Brahman living in Calcutta who has never been here, or a Chinese peasant who has never travelled more than 30 miles from the rice-farming village in which he was born.

Still, we're all humans and there are a fair number of mental traits we share in common. Aliens could be drastically different.... even incomprehensibly so.

They could reproduce asexually and have no distinction of gender, which would mean massive differences in their instincts and culture. Their primary sense might be a form of sonar, and the concept of "color" might be totally beyond their comprehension. They might communicate via biological radio waves and consider me deaf and mute because I can't.

Perhaps species Y is physically tougher by far than humans, has vastly greater trauma resistance and rapid regeneration, and six inch claws that pop out of their forearms. They might consider a shallow slash across the torso as the equivalent of a hard elbow-nudge, as a suitable reaction to rudeness. It might take an ongoing effort for them to remember how fragile and easily killed other species are, and struggle to restrain themselves in the presence of non-Y-aliens.

Species Z might be a small fragile hollow-boned species whose instinctive reaction to danger is to drop to the ground and freeze. Z's might have an enormous aversion to all meat-eaters and all species capable of violence. They might consider human sports like football or ice hockey to be the equivalent of gladiatorial deathmatches or feeding slaves to the lions. The mere presence of humans might send a flock of Z's into screaming panic, much like humans would react to an unrestrained tiger.

Those are just a few possibilities, culled from a lifetime of reading science-fiction. Real aliens might be even more strange, and the ability to reason and learn might not be enough to overcome fundamental differences and allow full interaction and integration.

The single biggest issue seperating species, however, might be technology. While I have never bought into the idea that starfaring aliens would necessarily be angelic in their benevolence and perfection, nor demigodlike in their science, there could be enormous differences in tech. Would super-advanced aliens treat us like equals or exploit us, or ignore us? Would we treat iron-age aliens like equals or protect them or exploit them?

The scenario painted in the OP seems to assume that differences in tech/science are not so drastic as to give one species automatic dominance, so I'll go from that and assume that the playing field is at least halfway level.

I think the differences that exist between species who developed on different worlds could be vastly more significant than the differences between human "races" or ethnic/cultural groupings. I suspect that we would find aliens with whom we shared the most common traits and form alliances, while others who possessed traits or cultures or systems we found repugnant would become our enemies or rivals. How much competition there would be for resources like habitable planets, unobtainium or other McGuffins would have a lot to do with it.

Where would I, personally, stand on the issue of "racial" (actually species) equality/integration/etc? Well I'd be facinated by aliens, it's my nature... but ultimately my goals would be the advancement and promotion of the HUMAN species, and secondarily the intrests of our alien allies. Alien species can do their own thing on their own worlds and I don't care that much, but when human and alien intrests come into conflict, my preference would be for humans to come out on top.

As molten dragon said, if it is us vs them, I vote in favor of "us".

If that makes me a "speciesist", so be it.

Don't matter if they're from Mexico or Betelguese. An alien is an alien. We are better than them until my cousin marries one.

Well that reminds me of a little tune...

"Lil' Sister brought her new boyfriend,
he was a Mexican;
We didn't know what to think of him
'till he sang Feliz Navidad,
Feliz Navidad...."

Merry Christmas Earth People. :lamo

Isn't that pretty far-fetched? I thought hicks marry thier cousin.:p

Hell, we ain't gonna marry each other. We grew up together and we ain't about to spend the rest of our lives like that.

:kitty:

Hey, I chose to let the Asari warship go up in flames in Mass Effect 1, and Joker raped Sovereign. I was a total human supremist in Mass Effect 2. Humans are being attacked in Mass Effect 3, I think that we can fight the Reapers off on our own. I'm a firm believer in the unlimited potential of humanity.

I'm assuming you have an all human council as well? We'll see how that works out for you in ME3, I'd fear for the planet though ;)

I, regrettably impulse voted yes. But I embrace all life, even if it dare be cockier than me.

Its not my fault the other species aren't as strong, ruthless and smart as humans haha

I'm not worried about 3, whatever doesn't kill us only makes us stronger.

If everyone isn't with us, were all dead.

I want an ending where the entire galaxy is destroyed.

That will probably be one of the possibilities. You'd have to be a real **** up though probably.

Actually I'd say Vorcha and Krogan are far more ruthless. And Salarians are more intelligent.

.
I only had 3 surviving team members at the end of ME2. I don't think I'm that bad though.

How did you let that happen??? I never lost a soul, and I've played it at least six times...

By going into the Omega Relay WAY too early. Not upgrading the Normandy at all will get about atleast 3-4 of your squad killed.

In my last play through I lost Jack, and that only happened because I sided with Miranda over her when they had their fight, and I didn't have the paragon/renegade choices available to solve the situation peacefully, so I lost Jacks loyalty.

Yeah, you have to be on your toes, do things fast that need to be done fast, but take your time with things that make the difference between success and failure at the end. I remember the fight, but I never lost either of their loyalty. I had paragon choices available in nearly every situation from the early part of the game on. I was such a good girl! ;)

Yeah, I did their loyalty quests way too early, and didn't have enough paragon points to have those options available. And yelling at the guy who calls me a stripper in Garrus's recruiting mission apparently isn't badass enough to give me the renegade option ;)

Assuming you meant "species", not race....

Humans are not the only species, and I'm not a human supremest.

It depends on the intelligent species we would be dealing with. If they thought of human babies as an appetizer, I'd be inclined to be a human supremacist. If they had babies that made for a tasty appetizer, same thing.

If they tasted like crap and they didn't want to eat or enslave us, I'd be inclined to want equality.
