When Did the United States Lose its Prestige?

When did the US lose its prestige?

Then please tell all the other Americans on this forum that they aren't allowed to chime in on this thread.

Well, everyone's entitled to their opinion, it's just that whatever American posters believe to be the case, the prestige of their nation can only exist in the minds of non-Americans. However much you might believe you have or don't have prestige, it's not in your power to control it. Foreigners will respect you or disrespect you sometimes for reasons that have little to do with the conscious action of US policy. The status of your prestige is an ephemeral and fickle thing. It can be, and has been, affected by political matters, sporting events, economic occurrences, cultural trends or even natural disasters, more often than not well beyond the power of government or the collective will to influence.

Because of all that, I wonder what the OP was really setting out to achieve in asking the question. Perhaps he just wanted to give posters the opportunity to make one another feel good about the country, or perhaps even the opposite.

A person hates you for 1 of 3 reasons:
1. They want to be you.
2. They hate themselves.
3. They see you as a threat. >>

4. Revenge for the terrible thing you did to them.

By whom? He's a supporter of fascism masquerading as an unbiased observer. The only people he's respected by are far right wingers like himself.

Would you call Howard Zinn a supporter of Marxism masquerading as an unbiased observor. The only people he's respected by are far left wingers like himself?

Just curious if it is some special expertise you hold on the assessment of historians or if perhaps your own political bias is showing?

Exactly. He's a nasty piece of work. He calls France fundamentally anti-democratic but cites Agustin Pinochet as one of his heroes. He admires Franco and defended the indefensible perjurer, Jonathan Aitken. He proclaims family values but is an unrepentant adulterer, in other words, a hypocrite. What's to like or respect?

OK so you judge historians by their perspective. So tell me who you consider to be a reputable historian?

Those threats against fascist dictators seem to be working superbly as well. I'm sure that quivering Libyan guy is about ready to cave after that previous stern letter.

Well, if that doesn't work, he can expect a phone call. No one wants a phone call from the POTUS.

Our greatness isn't lost, just tarnished. FDR certainly was the start... the new deal and the remaking of this country and laying the groundwork for the now ever present welfare/nanny state owes much of it to FDR's vision. Then again, I doubt FDR would have foreseen to what lows his policies would go in 60 years.

........... seriously

FDR was one the bloody reasons the US had prestige LOL. His political goodwill in helping the Brits against the Nazies while the rest of the US political establishment stuck their head in the ground. His determination in digging the US and the world economy out of the hole created by in large by a US melt-down, and his start of the great American and world economic revival that lead to the huge middle class in the US and in the industrialized world. Seriously you need a massive reality check and stop drinking the far right wacko revisionist cool aid.

Oh wow! There are loads. Simon Schama, Hugh Thomas, Alison Weir, David Baird, John Mann, Anthony Beevor, Doris Kearns Goodwin and so on, and so on. There are so many better writers out there than Johnson and thousands of better scholars. He writes history as polemic. If that's what you like...

Nixon was a good president actually. He got us out of a war, he opened relations with China, he started in with environmental concerns, he introduced a form of universal healthcare (it didn't fly). And all he did wrong was lie about knowing about something.

and price controls. and keyensian stimulus.
