    Alcoholism: Disease or Behavior

So those of us who follow baseball have seen Detroit Tiger's First Basemen Miguel Cabrera's latest drinking **** up. Whenever the subject is brought up in the media, they always refer to it as a disease. I don't buy into the disease theory, in my opinion it's a behavior because you can stop being an alcoholic without medication by just simply putting down the bottle. I believe the disease theory is just to rationalize and cover the social stigma that is associated with being addicted to the sauce.

I think it's a disease that alcoholics have brought upon themselves. Addicts' bodies and brains scream for their drug of choice.

I surely don't think it's cure is as easy as "simply putting down the bottle."

Drinking is a behavior. The inability to control that behavior is a disease.

Alcoholics who put the bottle down don't stop being alcoholics. They're just avoiding behaviors they know they can't control.

Alcoholism is a mentally disorder which lead to annihilation of brain and soul.

    Initially a behavior...
I think if Thomas Jefferson were looking down, the author of the Bill of Rights, on whats being proposed here, hed agree with it. He would agree that the First Amendment cannot be absolute. - Chuck Schumer (D). Yet, Madison and Mason wrote the Bill of Rights, according to Sheila Jackson Lee, 400 years ago. Yup, it's a fact.

Was about to say exactly this.

Also to add the inability to stop drinking comes from the addictive properties of alcohol. No one is an alcoholic, just because.

    Re: Alcoholism: Disease or Behavior

I got off the path from alcoholism recently, i saw where it was taking me and ive stopped drinking.

But the progression towards this was over the course of 4 years, from innocently drinking with my friends in high school quite often, to when i moved out on my own drinking very, very often sometimes even in the mornings...

Then when me and my girlfriend of 2 years broke up i went really, really far and it took me awhile to recover from that.

Thing is my moms dad was an alcoholic, but no one else in my family is as far as I know, so partially i think genes are responsible to a certain extent.

But its also conditioning, in England we started drinking from the time we were 14, then when I moved to Canada at 16 drinking again, was easy to do and very much part of the high school culture, so what started off as fun, ended with a decision never to touch it again....
