Halle Berry has came out and said her that her daughter is black because of the one-drop theory. Meaning you got one black drop of blood in you that makes you black. Do you feel this is racist to think this way during this day and time?

I have no problem with her saying her child is black as that is probably gonna be how the world at large may label her child. My problem is her use of the term the one-drop theory.

Does that not go back to like the slave days and is it really necessary to have that kind of thinking when it is the year 2011?

No. What was she supposed to say?

That her child is mixed or how about my child is a humanbeing like the rest of us? Why pull out the one-drop theory? She also made sure to tell black peeps that she has not abandon them. This is a half white woman talking like this! She of all people should know this kind of stuff is totally unnecessary:roll:

In the context I read, I don't think it was truly racist. However, considering the emotional roller-coaster of being in a bitter custody battle, and given that the child's father is white, I think she's trying to wrap her child in the cocoon of being black to decrease the chances that her child would be raised by a white father. She's publicly playing the culture card. As a mother, I understand. I'd play every card in the deck to keep custody of my child.

Sounds like she is a proud black woman, and her child, if that's her on the site, looks like her mom.
Why is this even an issue?

This is why she said it:

The comments are especially interesting in light of a TMZ report on Friday that claimed Aubry, 34, views their daughter as "white" and allegedly became very upset whenever Nahla was otherwise characterized.

American society as a whole believes in the one drop rule. Just look at Obama. We'll never hear people say 'Kill Obama the cracker!' We'll hear 'Kill Obama the nigger!' even though he is 50-50. Black people affirm that Obama is black and so do white people. It's not racist and more of a cultural issue. We tend to refer to people who are mixed by their other. Whether this was inherited from racist practices is debatable but it's not racist to believe in the 'one drop rule' by today's cultural context.

Halle Berry to Ebony magazine: My daughter Nahla is black because of the 'one-drop theory'

If we have to assign race to people, we should probably go with which race is over 50% with mixed race being an appropriate term for those people who do not have a majority in their heritage.

However, I don't think Halle Berry is being racist, just stupid.

If she wants to consider her daughter black, she's entitled to her opinion. It's been my personal experience most/all of the mixed blood white/black folks I've ever met tend to think of themselves as black. Halle berry would seem to be an example of this.

Mixed race children are seen as Black by many and will mostly be judged as that by society.

I see nothing wrong with what she said in that context

So, the father (who is white) had sex with one of the hottest women on the planet (who also just happens to be black), had a child, and is upset the child might be considered black? Sounds like he considers black women good enough to screw, but that's about it...

I think that puts the race card squarely in his corner, not hers.

Yeah, he sounds like a douche, I'd say whatever Halle Berry wanted me to say for the chance to screw her.

Ever see her Oscar winning performance in Monster's Ball? wow... anyone that can make sex with Billy Bob Thornton look good, DESERVES an Oscar.;)

This is why we refer to the once great Thai golfer Tiger Woods.

Again, this black/white crap must stop.
We are all humans, these other factors which conservatives hold so dear mean nothing.
And Halle Berry is 44 - now, that is news, I can't believe she is that "old".
She is so beautiful, so stunning.
Conditioning pays off.
I love her.

One of my son's best friends is half black and half native American. Another close friend is half Mexican. Another is half Polynesian. Another still is half Russian and half Thai. If you asked my son or any of his other friends about ethnicity, they would just shrug and not really be able to come up with an answer because it isn't an issue. It isn't an issue because they all just see each other as friends. There is nothing to distinguish them culturally, and so it doesn't matter.

Though true, it is a racist statement by today's standard.

That her child is mixed or how about my child is a humanbeing like the rest of us? Why pull out the one-drop theory? --

Depends on the society you are part of and where in that society you are. In South Africa her child would have been called "Cape Coloured" whether born or living near the Cape or not, in America as Hatuey says it's probably a phenomenon of cultural context.

A friend told me "you can write "mixed" or other on all the employment or official forms you ever have to write but you'll probably still be called "black" by the society you live in."

Were her intentions racist? I'm not sure. To be honest I feel it's foolish to say a person is black when the majority of their racial make-up is not black. I can understand with mixed individuals. If the one drop theory is held as true then that makes me a Native American despite being a majority white.

Parents of two different races arguing over which race their child belongs to-- with implications for their impending custody battle.

No, it's not racist. I will reserve my other thoughts for what it really is.

From what I have read, it was infact the Father who has refused to say his daughter was Black and didn't like anyone referring to her as such and would refer to her as only White.

She claims to identify herself as black so she says her daughter is black. The father identifies himself as white and thus calls his child White. It is ultimately the daughter's decision in the end what she wishes to classify herself as.

I think you are right. They are saying he called her the N word so what you are saying makes sense she would try to do that. I agree: anything to keep my child! But I just cringed when I read/heard she used that one drop thing. I was like damn we back in the slave days:confused::(

Wow. Kinda shocked that Finally some folks do agree with me on race relations based on the poll seems others do think it racist. Most times everybody thinks I am overreacting.

I get this but must we still use terms like black drop rule? I mean when are we gonna move past this nonsense? I guess never?

Again I have no proble her tossing the label of black on her child as I understand people will probably judge that child based on her skin tone. I did like her saying it will be her daugthers choice to make once she is old enough.

My problem was the one drop thing as it shocked me she used it. I mean people still use that term? Makes me sad. That is all and yes I find it racist.

"Classify" her as a human being.
Why is that so difficult for so many ???
I do not care for the word "classify", this refers to animals, things, not humans.
