Is government the problem?

Elections? :lamo

Reduce the influence and effectiveness is the only way.

Ah yes, the old cut off the nose to spite the face procedure. I've heard of that method. It is why we never solve any of our real problems.

You mean we never actually reduce their influence or effectiveness, therefore never solve any real problems --- I agree. See, what you call the "old cut off the nose to spite the face" hasn't been done, ever, in this country. Government has grown steadily and consistently. What Obama calls the "same failed policies", as it doesn't matter the letter after the name of the politicians, it's grown under all of them. So how about a little REAL change?

What do you suggest?

Government is the problem in regards to the following issues;

1. National debt
2. Drug War
3. Entitlement Programs
4. Ability to start/run a business
5. Immigration
6. Foreign Policy

Government is the problem. By that I mean both mainstream parties and the rich lobbyists/corporate global fat-cats that pull their strings. When the bailout occurred; as a small business owner myself I learned what a LIE the so-called "American Dream" is and how there really is no justice in this system. America's trade policies and foreign policies are ruining our way of living and any hope for world peace.

This is one of those funny threads. It purports to be about "government" and if it is the problem. Without stating what the problem is. Reagan's comments were aimed at "the current crisis" but I'm not sure anyone in the thread is even aware what he was referring to. Reading through the thread and in particular at the author of the threads comments, it looks as clear as day to me that the real problem is this is just another bash Reagan thread. It certainly is not really about discussing the problems associated with government or too much of it or even government overspending. Just another anti Reagan thread trying to masquerade as an honest discussion about the topic of government. Maybe next time just be honest and label your thread what it is and engage on that topic.

I call shenanigans on this post. The OP is what it is, based on Reagan's statement, often repeated, and provided in full here. Offer your opinion or no, but, this pissy, whimpy accusation that somehow the thread is unfair is just pathetic. Find a back bone!

judges and justices who overturn the awful decisions dating to the New Deal

So your position is that all of the judges and justices for the last 78 years were wrong but you are right?

What would you replace government with?

IMO, every item on your list there, the majority of the country agreed on, at least at the time. While I realize that many of us, myself included, did not go along with the direction of many or all of the issues, they pretty much represent where middle America stood on those issues, as sad as that may be for those of us right or left of center.

A government can only be as wise as the people it represents.

The question is too simplistic. Is the government part of the problem? Yes. Is the government part of the solution? Yes. Are factors other than the government as big or bigger parts of the problem? Yes.

The question is too simplistic? Well, of course, that was my point. Reagan's statement and his philosophy ultimately was too simplistic even childish. Today we are visited with the offspring of his particularly simpleminded attitudes towards government. He was wealthy, well isolated from the everyday concerns that common people deal with all the time. These Reaganites don't know or ignore how essential government's role has been in protecting ordinary folks from the vagaries of modern life. Reagan caused incredible harm to America in my opinion.

I would suggest people wake up and educate/empower themselves and replace our current representatives with actual representatives rather than fall into the repub vs demo poison that has gripped the nation. IMO they're both the same agendas serving the same select few people.

For the most part, I agree with you here, but that is not replacing government, it is a reawakening/rejuvenation of the voters, and I support that effort wholeheartedly.
