This is all you know of these people. Do they deserve your respect?

There is no "other" option in the Poll because its a straight yes/no anwer. With the exception of the person that you know personally you either respect them all or you don't respect any of them.

    Re: Respect.

Only the person that I know would deserve my respect (assuming that I respect that person). Respect has to be earned, and someone I just met on the street has done nothing to earn it.

You've got to show it to get it.

All strangers are respected by me until they prove otherwise.

    Re: Respect.

I try to respect people as a default behavior until I get to know them better, of course there are varying degrees of respect but I try to apply a general one to everyone I met before I get to know them. Of course thats also a standard I don't always live up to.

If I meet a stranger who's working somewhere, I respect their job and their knowledge of it. So if they ask me to get out of the way, or give me an instruction I'll generally follow it. For example I consider a store clerk to be in charge of his store and if he asks me to stop "touching all the candy," not that I go into stores and put my hands all over the food, I'd respect that. But that doesn't mean I respect him as much as my CO for example.

You can be respectful 'to' someone, without nessecarily having respect 'for' them.

    NO, totally disagree
Every man merits a degree of respect, if one cannot respect another, then we can return to the cave man days.
And when I respect my fellow man (and I do have to work on this every day), his skin color, occupation, age are NOT factors.....basic respect....all the same.
Now, Mother Teresa, Barack Obama, my wife, all have earned much more respect.....a congressman...only the basic respect or less, this depends on the man.....since I do not know any(personally).

This. I'm neutrally respectful (i.e. polite) to people, but actual respect must be earned.
