This is all you know of these people. Do they deserve your respect?

There is no "other" option in the Poll because its a straight yes/no anwer. With the exception of the person that you know personally you either respect them all or you don't respect any of them.
I tend to give people respect until they give me a reason not to. So, why not. By default, I see people as valuable and good. It may be considered naive by some, but I very rarely get cheated or mistreated, so there is no reason to change my policy. Plus, I believe that attitude is the Christian one.

Now, Mother Teresa, Barack Obama, my wife, all have earned much more respect.....a congressman...only the basic respect or less, this depends on the man.....since I do not know any(personally).

To me being polite is nothing more than manners. Respecting someone however is on a higher level.

I don't agree. You don't have to know someone to respect them as a citizen of our world. And they don't have to be nice people. Respect is different than admiration or approval. Respect is something that's in one's heart for other human beings. It's been my life's experience that, if I show it, I will almost invariably get it back in return.

    Re: Respect.

I try to be respectful to everyone - it's merely being polite and proper.

People, though, have to offend me quite a bit to lose my respect - but it does happen.

    Re: Respect.

Everyone needs to earn respect, it's not just granted on a whim. I had to vote no, simply because it was the closest answer.
There is nothing demonstrably true that religion can provide the world that cannot be achieved more rationally through entirely secular means.

You are a commie union member?

I don't think in the absence of anything else the word respect is one I would use. People I do not know I try and treat with courtesy, which looks the same but is not respect. I respect(or disrespect) people I know. I treat people I don't know courteously(or at least I try).
