You give me lots of reason to use it, in fact, think I'll call that emoticon "Johnny". Your comparison of prostitution to the civil rights movement is significantly ridiculous.

So you'd say the southern states have a history of being open to change and increases in civil rights?

You think prostitution is a civil right?

I wouldn't classify it as a civil right, but a civil liberty, if that makes any sense. Maybe I'm just using word play but I think you know what I mean. Little college sluts go around sleeping with 20 guys their first year of college. Young gold diggers date and sleep with older men for the financial benefits, like all of Hugh Hefners girls. I have a friend I grew up with who had a knack for getting women, and he slept with over 200 girls by the time he finished college. No joke, I listened while he counted them all off. He couldn't remember all of their names of course. He'd be like "then there was Las Vegas, then there was New York, then there was L.A. #1 #2 and #3, then there was the pool party" etc. So, all of that immorality is perfectly legal but a man can't walk into a brothel and pay for sex? Personally, I think it is all morally wrong, but it makes no sense keeping promiscuity perfectly legal and brothel prostitution illegal.

I don't support prostitution as a morally viable profession, however since abortion is legal, why should prostitution be as well? Two wrongs don't make a right, however laws have to be applied equally and if we going to allow women to control their bodies as well as that of unborn humans, then what's the difference? Think about it.

Legalizing prostitution doesn't allow women to control their bodies. It allows the third party john to control their bodies. For money.

I agree, with a conservative, yet.
Being pragmatic, accepting reality, is the way to go.
We live in a very imperfect world, we as humans are very imperfect.
Morally, prostitution may be wrong....but its the imperfect thing.
Having prostitution illegal is also a case of the state caving into the demands of the church.

Why is prostitution morally wrong? A simple fact is that across the country people 'hook-up' for the 'hook-up'. So since people are regularly engaging in random sexual acts, why would it be any more morally wrong for one partner or the other to say, "look, skip the 80 dollar bar tab and the 100 dollar dinner...we'll split the taxi, split the savings, give me 90 bucks and I'll blow you."

I know thats crass...but get beyond all the nicey nicey bull****, and why should you have to drop 180 bucks on the local economy on the pretense that its anything more than a random sex act?

only if someone is forcing the woman to sell her body to the john.

if a woman can choose to kill her unborn child, why the hell can't she choose to have sex for money? at least with prosititution, no one is getting killed.

true dat.

why should you have to spend $180 bucks on a chance that you might get some, when you can just straight up pay and be assured you are going to get what you want?

Questions like this are precisely why prostitution should remain illegal. Prostitution encourages this kind of diseased thinking.

Wait...what are you calling diseased thinking? You SURELY cant be imagining that across the country (heck...across the WORLD) people arent doing this on a regular basis are you? I truly do not see why it is any more diseased for a couple to engage in a one night only business transaction vs a pretense one night stand. The end result is the same...two strangers came together, came together (all things willing), and then separated, ne'er agin to consider the other individual. So why would it then be MORE diseased for people to do the same thing for a few bucks and avoid the dinner and a movie schtick?

Prostitution is a horrible practice that erodes the moral fiber of any nation. It should absolutely remain illegal.

Maybe your moral fiber, the simple solution would be not to have sex with prostitutes if you don't like prostitutes.

You're right, better to make everything legal. That way there won't be any crime because nothing will be against the law.

Well no one would be in jail for victimless crime.

You have very strange ideas about what's good for society. You said the same thing about abortion, and, I bet you feel the same way about legalizing drugs. Am I right?

So the government should tell you what to do in your personal life but not businesses or banks?

The existence of prostitution assures that women-- and men, and children-- will be victimized. Society's response should be to ensure that there is as little prostitution as possible.

Keeping it illegal insures that women will be less likely to report victimization, regulations would protect them. Your argument is like saying that legalizing marijuana makes cartels stronger (it doesn't).

Except most women don't meet the standards of those legal brothels, and would still be forced into a dangerous and dehumanizing profession.

Source? What do you think the standards are?

You seem to think that this is acceptable, that pretending to be interested in a person solely to have sex with them is the behavior of a decent human being. It is not. It is shameful and it is exploitative and it is borne of the same thinking that drives prostitution-- the notion that other people exist solely to sate our sexual desires. Human sexuality is more than the cheap and meaningless rutting of animals. Reducing it to a business transaction or deceiving people for the purpose of using them diminishes it and it diminishes us; it is sad and lonely and disgusting and the last thing we should do is to encourage it further. Our culture is already saturated with pornography that encourages promiscuity and exploitation and outright abuse.

Im not putting my own moral spin on it. Personally...I wouldnt engage in the activity. I wouldnt endorse my children engage in the activity. That being said, I fail to see the moral superiority of an indiscriminate sexual engagement between two adults over an indiscriminate sexual act for profit between two consenting adults. nothing more nor less.

The difference? Prostitution encourages people to treat their sexual encounters in this fashion. It encourages the belief that a man is entitled to sexual favors, especially if he gives a woman money or gifts. It reduces an intimate connection between two people-- however slight and brief-- into a business transaction.

I am no fan of indiscriminate sexual encounters. But, at least, when there is no money involved, one person has to take the other's feelings into account.

You mean they have to PRETEND to take the feelings into account. Sorry...Im not that far removed (as in...I know individuals that do and are regularly involved) from the indiscriminate sex scene that I dont see it for what it is. And please get...Im not judging it one way or the other (the indiscriminate sex or prostitution). Im not endorsing either. Just stating it as a reality. The implication as I understand you is that if those people were just having sex for money it would adversely impact their sense of self esteem/respect. As compared to 'just' having indiscriminate sex, how so? Heck...they might be able to help pay their way through college.

We have already got a pretty significant number of 5 dolla ho's under todays rules. They are certainly abused and exploited by both the pimps johns, and legal system. I dont think legalizing makes that situation worse...and it might make it better.

It's not their self respect I'm concerned with. It's the way they're encouraged to view their relationships. Honestly, I'm more disgusted with the customers than with the prostitutes.

It should be legal. It's their body and if they want to sell it for sex, they should be free to do so. Is it the best option? Probably not, but it's not my decision to make.

OK...I can see that. But how damaging is it to the customers self respect to do the shark circle around a club repeatedly shut down til finally, at 3 minutes to closing time, he looks around to see if any of his friends are watching and picks up on the old double bagger sitting at the end of the bar?

I hate how flippant this sounds. I dont mean to make light of it or ridicule it. Nonetheless...it happens. Add to that the number of times people DO do the $$$ dating dance, end up paired up, the girl is thinking second base, the guy is thinking home run, and physical/sexual assault is the result.

That is borne of the thinking that prostitution engenders. It is borne of the idea that a man is entitled to sexual favors, that other people exist to provide those favors. When you reduce sexuality to market exchange, it becomes subject to the rules of the market. When it is a thing to be bought and sold, people believe that they can buy it-- whether it's for sale or not.

And as I said earlier...if women would pay for it, it would be legal and there would be degrees in it.

Would it not make MUCH more sense to have a couple discuss in advance what they were agreeing (emphasis on the word AGREEING) to and accept mutual terms? Is that REALLY any different than what currently happens? (edit...what SHOULD happen. Currently it DOESNT and it is one of the reasons so many sexual assaults occur).

I dont think the dating scene would stop, nor would the club scene, NOR the indiscriminate not for profit sexual encounters. I just think it is silly to recognize that ONE instance (indiscriminate sexual encounters) happens with great regularity and that somehow the other (for profit sexual encounters) is 'more wrong'.
