Which is more important? The cause or the solution?

Since there has always been a lot of 'Bush is at fault' posts, I thought I'd ask...

The solution. But sometimes you have to beat people over the head with the problem until they recognize that it is one.

This is fun to think about. But impossible to answer when asked so plainly... because it really depends. If the solution is dependent on the cause or if the problem will persist without determining and preventing the cause, then the cause takes priority. But if you have no reason to believe the cause will continue to create the assumed problem nor will its discovery aid in the solution, then you ought to prioritize the solution. And after the fact, discover the cause so that it may be learned from for the future.

    Do you have any parameters?

My initial post gives the parameter in question...

I'm not sure if one is "more important" than the other. First one has to recognize that there is a problem in the first place, acknowledge it. Understanding the cause is key to actually formulating a solution. I don't see this as either/or or that one is more important than the other.

Obviously the cause. If we know the cause of the problem, a solution can be formulated to try and keep it from recurring.

A solution without a cause is worthless - they are called inventions that went bust!

Both. The cause can lead to a solution, and the cause let's you know how to avoid the problem again. The solution lets you fix the problem.

Generally when a problem arises, solving it is of more immediate concern than anything else. Determining the cause of the problem however, is also important, as it can teach us lessons on how to avoid that problem in the future.

To me it matters not what Bush caused, whether or not his policies helped lead this country into a recession does nothing to increase my salary. Thus, I only care about solutions, and preventing another like cause from ascending to power again.
