To me its like a chicken and egg thing.

The solution resolves the problem but cause allows one to make sure it doesnt happen again.

I'd say the solution but first you have to find EXACTLY what the problem is.

I say solution. Now if the person who caused the mess is offering the solution then the cause becomes more important. Because how can you trust the solutions that person has to offer?
"A nation can survive its fools, and even the ambitious. But it cannot survive treason from within. An enemy at the gates is less formidable, for he is known and carries his banner openly. But the traitor moves amongst those within the gate freely, his sly whispers rustling through all the alleys, heard in the very halls of government itself. For the traitor appears not a traitor; he speaks in accents familiar to his victims, and he wears their face and their arguments, he appeals to the baseness that lies deep in the hearts of all men. He rots the soul of a nation, he works secretly and unknown in the night to undermine the pillars of the city, he infects the body politic so that it can no longer resist. A murder is less to fear"

If you don't remove the cause, you could spend an eternity on the solution.

The cause or solution to what? Many problems can't be solved unless you understand the cause of them.
    Are you coming to bed?
    I can't. This is important.

A solution without a cause is worthless - they are called inventions that went bust!
He didn't ask if one was important and one was not, he asked which is more important... and that is obviously the solution. Knowing the cause is important, like you say, but creating a solution gets you out of the situation. Knowing that they car is not moving due to no fuel is important. But when needing to get somewhere, the solution... putting the fuel into the car is MORE IMPORTANT so that you can actually get there.

The cause, this is what we learn from.
The solution is also very important, of course.

    Both are equally important.

Actually they both go together, you can't have one without the other, so they are both equally important. You can't say one is more important than the other.

Your analogy about the car out of gas, if you know the cause - that the car won't go without gas, you will put gas in it and not let it run out, in other words you never need the solution to running out of gas.
