I'm an Atheist, but I would have thought if a God existed he would have stopped blessing the US military when they killed over 100,000 people in Iraq. That would seem to have a little more persuasion than letting homosexuals serve openly in the military.

Even from a purely literalistic perspective, I think Yahweh might have more of a problem with us allowing their existence at all. Homosexuals are abominations who mix fabrics and eat shellfish.

Heck, take a look at the list of nations that prohibit homosexuals from openly serving in the military. Half of them are enemies of the US anyway lol. Do they get special blessing for hating on the gays?

My father fought in WW2 against the Nazis. You know, the Nazis, those wild and crazy guys who committed the mass murder of jews, socialists, gypsies, homosexuals, and basically anybody else they didn't like, in death camps, by the millions? Who wanted to run the world likewise? You're going to try to tell me that God would have preferred that we not use violence against the Nazis? Perhaps harsh language would have sufficed? Maybe we should have simply surrendered to them? Can you suggest a non-violent solution for dealing with Hitler that doesn't involve simply letting him murder millions of innocent people?

And you think the soldiers who fought that war to stop that evil were anathema in God's sight because they were killing Nazi's?

Does God ever bless soldiers or armies?
You are winning this debate with your sensibilities. Of course I despise the Nazis and the atrocities that they committed. And no, the Prince of Peace would have had a struggle on his hands trying to convince them to stop.

I'm familiar with the story of David. He does kill Goliath, much to the delight of God (supposedly).

I shall concede this argument to you, Blackdog, and all other soldiers that have killed in battle. I never meant to cause anyone to feel bad because of a slight difference in belief. I only wanted to help those who carry a burden by suggesting that they take a moment to let God make them feel better. St. Peter will be asking the questions, not me.

If the taking of another human life wasn't a burden, all of the members of a firing squad would have a live round.

It is always hard to take a life be it a police officer or soldier etc in the line of duty. I thank God I never had to.

You're a good man, Mickey, and I never meant to imply otherwise. If everyone loved their neighbor as their self, it would be a wonderful world. Unfortunately, it is a hard world, tainted by sin, and full of hard choices sometimes.

Thanks Goshin, and it is quite true that the world is a hard hearted place. There was probably war ever since the first time that a caveman clan discovered that another, slightly different caveman clan existed. It's a shame really that humans are so combative.

Not me so much as I've know no war. At my age now, that probably won't change unless a war comes to the streets of America. At which time I will take up arms and kill other humans much to my dismay. So no, I'd never qualify for CO status due to my beliefs.
