How can the word "Jew" be offensive?

To be a Jew one only needs to adopt the Judaic religion - Jewishness is a religion

Not true.

Jewish is also an ethnicity whether or not said Jewish people are practicing Judaism.

No it isn't. Like any word if said with malice or contempt it becomes offensive. But in and of itself? Of course not.

This is not going to end well.

Except, of course, that it HAD ended over a year and a half ago before a brand new poster with some obvious issues revived it.

It's come up in a thread that some people might consider the word "Jew" to be offensive or insulting. Is "Jew" offensive? I ask this in all sincerity because I do use the word and it hadn't occurred to me that it might be a bad thing to do.

Absolutely not....

My wife is Jewish and she's not bothered by it

When used as a noun, no. When used as an adjective, almost always.

Old thread is old, but I'll give my 2 cents anyway.

Along time ago, I said "Jew" as I would "Muslim" or "Christian" or "Arab" or any other descriptor and then my mother told me to never say it again which I found odd since I had never heard of it being derogatory. Because of that, I usually stick with "Jewish person" to be safe, but sometimes I say "Jew" anyway because I haven't come across anyone other than my mother who thinks it's offensive. So the answer is : I have no idea.

It just depends on how it's used. You can say "Joe Lieberman is a Jew," and that's not offensive even though it is an adjective. I think it's wrong when used as a verb (" I jew-ed down the price")

In the latter, then, the problem is not so much the word "Jew", but the application of a stereotype. It's just like saying, "he acts black" or something similarly stupid. Calling someone "black" isn't problematic, but when you treat "black" or "Jew" as anything but a descriptor of ethnicity, race or religion - the use of the word becomes problematic.

You did not use it as an adjective but as a noun.

reminds me of a joke I heard many years ago. there is a young boy, half black half jewish, one night he asks his father, "Dad, am I more Jew or more black?". Dad is confused and answers, "I'm not sure son, why do you ask?"
Son replies, "Jimmy down the street is wanting to sell me his bicycle for $10 and I need to know whether I should try to talk him down to $5 or just steal the son-of-a-bitch."

I got one for you. What's the definition of "virgin" in Arkansas?

A girl who runs faster then her brothers and father.

This is a common dodge of Jew-haters. "Oh, I don't hate all Jews," they'll say. "Just the ones who want to have a country and exist."

So if you don't agree with Zionism you are automatically an anti-semite?

That's the common dodge of Zionists.

If I called one of my Jewish friends a 'Jew", they'd probably call me a 'Christian'. I don't use the term at all. Jewish is an acceptable adjective. Jew is a bad noun. Jew is a terrible verb.

Then why do Jews use it all the time?

And - all in all - it's odd and untraditional to say "He is *a* Greek" - or "She's A Frank" . . . it sounds more ideal to the ear and it's just more fluid when speaking to say "She is Jewish" - more so than "She is *a* Jew"

So would say "he is Greekish" and "She is Frankish"?

This whole discussion must be a joke.

For much the same reason as others use "whited sepulchre".

Now this is just an absurd thread.

Political correctness taken to the max.
Kike is a term that some people think its derogatory.

Jews are a people. It is the defition for one who is jewish according to their laws. If you call someone who is not jewish, a jew, he is entitled to be offended. just like you would to call someone something he isn't.

But the term jew is not a bad word. You won't get punished if you use it in kindergarten.

The first objective of fascism is to control speech. Once you do that you can demonize and crush any opponent that get's in your way.

Really? That's a little disappointing to hear. I like to think that I base myself on at least historical record before coming to my conclusions about stuff. In particular, your statement that anyone who mentions this is anti-semitic. I just take exception to that. The reason I became interested in anything relating to what you call ZOG, that also falls under the NWO category is because it has the name Rothschild all over it. The Israeli Supreme Court AND Knesset building were gifts from the Rothschild family to the State of Israel. We're not talking about a monument or a fountain. We're talking about ... well, buildings. Big, important, official ones, shrouded in mystery, gifted as-is (no questions asked) and full of Masonic imagery and symbolism which itself is influenced by Kabbalah and Khemit (ancient Egypt) traditions. There also seems to be a lot of historical evidence for linking Adam Weishaupt (founder of the illuminati) and Mayer Amschel Bauer (who later changed his name to Rothschild).

I guess what I'm trying to point out is that it is possible to come at this from, say, studying symbology, or esoteric/occult tradition and/or Freemasonry, and not be anti-Semitic. This doesn't mean that I suspect every Jew of hiding a secret key or code that's going to get them passage onto the second Ark, or that they are planning my demise. For me its about exploring and unraveling the meanings of the symbols
that have not changed much since the time of the Egyptians yet have a way of showing up in Britney Spears videos, and Jay-Z can't stop singing about them when he isnt too busy flashing 'the Roc' (triangle sign, named after Rockefeller, Jay-Zs crew is called Rocka Fella).. now come on... isn't that just TOO MANY coincidences?

Excuse me but the conspiracy thread is about three blocks to your right.:doh

Why would "Jew" in itself be offensive?

Context, people.

Then why do Jews use it all the time?

I'm not aware that they do. I had to call a locksmith last Thursday. The guy that came out was from Israel, having only been in the US for less than a year. His name is Leo. He said: "I am from Israel. I am Jewish." Not: I am a Jew.

Well, the Jews I know do. Frequently.

Is that the only Jew you know?

BTW - I noticed "Not, I am a Jew" was your addition.
