Should the government regulate and censor video games? Or should the ESRB exist?

The ESRB is the best system. Everyone in Australia hates the Australian rating board, because they ban nearly half of the mature and teen games released every year.

Back when the ESRB was created it was just the industry regulating themselves, but now, not so much.

    Also, rainbow gore!

Regulate, yes. Censor, no. I have no problem with the notion that certain games do not belong in the hands of children, but adults should be allowed to play what they wish.

What I would prefer, though, is that the games industry grow the Hell up and learn the difference between maturity and "mature content".

Probably a derail, but I'm wondering what you mean by this?

I'm saying that video game designers seem to delight in gratuitous sex and violence and often treat them as substitutes for engaging narrative and/or gameplay experiences, and that this is hurting both the development and the reputation of the medium. For every Grand Theft Auto IV there are a dozen imitators without half the cultural or artistic merit and there are far too many gamers-- indeed, many of them children-- who deliberately seek out games on the basis that they are obscene and transgressive.
