We're having this discussion in the education section, so I thought I'd bring it up here for a poll.

Your opinions, please and thank you. :)

I went to a prep school undergoing a transformation from being an all boys school to coed. when it was all boys coats and ties were required. when girls came the uniform for them was white blouses and navy skirts. The girls complained that this was more restrictive than the boys' uniform. ultimately this code was scrapped. There was lots of variations for the boys-everything from corduroy pants or jackets to some guys wearing three piece suits. I believe a more sensible code-such as khaki trousers and white polo shirts etc would have made more sense. My kid goes to the same school and in lower school there was that sort of code, in the upper school its more like no jeans, no t-shirts, no sandals or sneakers for the boys, and the girls have stuff like no spaghetti straps, no bare middles, no "daisy dukes" or micro minis

the advantages of real uniforms is kids don't waste so much time trying to one up each other. and no flaunting daddy's wealth

The poll is coming.....stupid @#&*@ internet connection!

I think schools with lots of discipline problems can benefit from uniforms. I'm not crazy about a federal mandate for that, but I'm okay with the state requiring that of certain schools. That might even be an incentive for the students to study. If the school does well acadmeically for a few years, the uniform mandate can be lifted. I don't think they are needed for schools with high academic scores and low discipline problems. A dress code will do there.

I think uniforms are a good idea in public schools-Private schools are free to do what they want. If that means everyone wears Tutus so be it. However, there should be no federal control over state public schools including this area

I was leaning toward the second to last answer, but chose the last one. I have the gut feeling that most of the uniform vision may rely upon novelty to escape the usual norm. It could be that once uniforms become the majority, the same problems will come crawling back. Thus, I grow skeptical when such a measure is encouraged to be implemented in a wider and wider area.

That's a good point.

Instead of trying to force conformity on students I think it is better to allow them some exploration of their own individuality.

To a degree it is exploration of their individuality, but for numerous reasons it also leads back to conformity or stigma.

Uniforms seem kind of pointless to me, just have a dress code, and leave it at that.

I support mandatory uniforms in all public schools.

Uniforms, definitely. The biggest advantage is cost. I went to Catholic School with uniforms. My kids went to public school without uniforms. My folks had it much easier, especially when it came to my daughters (4 of them). The girls always had to stay in fashion. Well... I guess my son did, too. Lmao...

Uniforms make kids feel they belong, feel they are a member of an exclusive club, and gives them the incentive to keep their uniforms clean and pressed or-- look foolish around the other kids.

Seriously, digs??

I think it would help kids be disciplined. Right now schools and students are failing and I primarily attribute it to culture and a lack of discipline. I support school uniforms but I would be ok with having a professional and modest dress code.

Uniforms don't make kids feel like they belong. There are still outcasts, kids who make fun of others, cliques, etc. Uniforms aren't some magical phenomenom that make all kids' troubles go away.

I don't see uniforms would help the kids be disciplined. All it will really do is make kids pissed off that they have to wear them.

I would not doubt in the least that in some certain circumstances, some certain schools, you will find such benefits. I also happen to agree that on the contrary it may be more of a surface patch to the problems, which may not be possible to solve. Perhaps I am too tainted by Rossi's declaration that the better the test, the more likely one will find that the effects were zero.

Uniform in schools is necessary if state want to get well-educated citizens, not drugs addicted illiterate sexual perverse leftist welfare receivers.

Well...

I see your mind is made up.

Amen dude. I can tell you from first hand experience that's the truth.

Go to any school in England, public and private.

Yep. I was in uniforms from K-4 to 12th. They just making shopping and picking out what to wear for school an easier decision.

Unless it was like my schools, where until you reached the highest grade, you had to wear a certain kind of uniform, and you had to buy it through the school. Cost a ****ing fortune, the private school mandated you buy a certain amount of items as well.

Money grabbing bastards.
