Wal-Mart to start airing Homeland Security messages

Do you think it's appropriate for DHS to air this in Wal-Mart?

Wow. This just seems so over-the-top to me. I think our nation has absolutely lost its collective mind worrying about terrorism. This kind of message seems incredibly Big Brotherish. Do we really need Janet Napolitano to warn us to report suspicious activity in the Wal-Mart parking lot? I mean, really?

What do you guys think? Is it appropriate for DHS to produce this kind of message to air in Wal-Mart? Is it appropriate for Wal-Mart to air such a message? (And please don't post any bull**** like "zomg private company they do what they want lol." I already know Wal-Mart's opinion; I'm asking for yours.)

It's kinda messed up and I think it's a mistake not to really define "suspicious".

What do mean aire? Like over a PA system? I say no.
On their TVs in the electronics? Sure, why not.

I don't think this has anything to do with fear. As for if it should be done, I could honestly care less. But since it's probably paid for by taxes, I am against it. I don't see any reason to be against the message or anything like that.

What is the difference?

There simply MUST be more here than meets the eye...some kind of partnership with Corporate America or something.

I could see public service announcements like this on television actually; but at a WalMart? Just plain strange. Like TwiLight Zone strange.

I say no. If Walmart wishes to have a spokeperson warn you about terrorist and other stuff then that is Walmart's business. But Public officials should not be doing this. It gets their foot in the in door for other types of broadcasts and stuff. If there is really a danger outside then a Wal-mart manager can get on the PA system to warn people.

Yesterday, my mother sent me some nonsense e-mail about muslims attacking us in the air. It was a fraudulent piece written by a man who wasn't even on the flight on which the scenario supposedly occurred.

My parents shop at Walmart. I'm sure the message will be received loud and clear--by them (and others like them)--who are just afraid of the evil muslim menace.

I think we are going to perish, as a species, from drowning in our own stupidity.

p.s. This is exactly why I never set foot in Walmart.

Well, that's the last time I'M going to Walmart in search of a reasonably priced falafel maker.

I didn't realize this PSA was about Islam

I'm sure educated intellectual wishywashy moderate centrist christs can save us all.

Ah yes. Only irrational delusional paranoid unreasonable xenophobic liars shop at walmart, even though their xenophobia is halfassed with the buying of chinese goods and the shopping in a multilingual store with all the mexicans. All the reasonable rational anti-globalist hyper-politically-correct autophobic allophiles are living rich tolerant lives because they're not stupid wal mart shoppers.

Did I hit a nerve? :D

Creepy, and reminescent of Gestapo tactics once used many years ago.

I think it would be creepy if I'm shopping and just heard a voice telling me to be careful in the parking lot, look out for suspicious people etc. If I'm looking at tvs and that's the message being played, not so odd. Don't know how many televisions she would sell though......
I didn't think of the cost to taxpayers (thanks R. Shackelferd) so I'm against it either way. :)

Our , and its OUR tax money must NOT be spent for this waste and silliness.
I go to Walmart to buy stuff....NOT to hear propaganda.
Do we really need a Department of Homeland Security ???????
What we do need is ONE organization to INTELLIGENTLY gather data/info.

Funny, I didn't hear Muslim or terrorism in that message.
It was Napalitono for crying out loud. To her, muslims aren't terrorists. Right wing tea partiers, pro-lifers and our military are.
That's who I thought she was talking about.

Sure you did. :lamo

I mean, HLS isn't really going to care about some common thief right? So I don't think they're talking about that. It's fear mongering and nothing more.

I don't really have much of a problem with it, as long as WalMart actually agreed to do it voluntarily and wasn't made to do it. Considering the story that I read that went with that video, I'm pretty sure that it was voluntary. And it isn't just WalMart that is doing it. So is Mall of America, some hotel chains, Amtrak, and DC public transit.

Maybe it just doesn't bother me because when I lived in Hawaii, they had written messages on all their public buses that essentially said the same thing. And we are told to do that in the military, look for unattended bags or packages, and report them. And to even look for suspicious looking people, people who are watching you or following you, or who are acting strange.

Now, I think it wouldn't have been so creepy if it would have been someone who is a little more charismatic and if they would have included examples of suspicious activity, instead of just leaving it open. Considering that specific video is for WalMart, many people could look strange and suspicious in there. I know, that is one of my favorite places to shop.
