Re: Does your political affiliation define you?

My political views are an outgrowth of how I view myself and the world around me. I find it difficult to respect, let alone like, those who see the world in a way that is significantly different from my own view.

Has anyone mentioned lately how awesome it is that you call yourself "very liberal"?

Once you get to the left of "social democrat," you become very liberal in this country, assuming you are looking at things from a left/right perspective.

Being tolerant of other views doesn't mean that you have to like them.

No, my political views don't define me. I like and respect good people, left or right, atheist or theist, etc.

Re: Does your political affiliation define you?

    I don't really have a "political affiliation".

My views vary from issue to issue.

For example, I'm likely somewhere close (even I’m not entirely sure) to a:
    Gay rights/marriage/DADT libertarian/liberal.
    Fiscal libertarian/conservative/something that doesn't have a label.
    Abortion libertarian/conservative.

You see how confusing to people it would be if I claimed a specific political affiliation.

    So, Independent.
    Education.

My political affiliation does not define me.

Rather, I define my political affiliation.

What a chicken and egg question.

My values largely shape my political affiliation. A person's character is defined by their values.

I don't really have a political affiliation. However my politics is defined by my faith, and my faith is something I want to define me. So indirectly you could say my political affiliation (or lack thereof) defines me.

You see this is not true though. The political parties will define how they are this is why you have people become independents or shift parties in the first place. Look at Regan for example.
"We’re going to close the unproductive tax loopholes that allow some of the truly wealthy to avoid paying their fair share. In theory, some of those loopholes were understandable, but in practice they sometimes made it possible for millionaires to pay nothing, while a bus driver was paying ten percent of his salary, and that’s crazy." -Reagan
