Republican candidates for 2012

Who are you supporting for 2012 Republican candidate?

  • Fmr. Governor Mike Huckabee of Arkansas

    Votes: 0 0.0%
  • Governor Haley Barbour of Mississippi

    Votes: 0 0.0%

  • Total voters

Just about any Republican > Palin = Obama

That's generally my equation for who I'm likely to be voting for in the next election. As long as the Republicans don't nominate Palin it's going to be an amazingly easy answer for me. If its Palin, I honestly don't know if I can bring my self to cast a vote for someone who gives legitimacy to conspiracy nutbags

Did you like it when he said Texas should sucede from the Nation?

I'm no Rick Perry supporter, but I have to defend him here. He never once said that Texass should secede from the union. He did say that people are talking about it and that would be a bad idea.

This question is for Republicans and people who plan to vote in the republican primaries only. Which candidate do you support to run against Obama in 2012? (Candidates are naturally speculative, as we're so early in the cycle.) If you don't care about the 2012 race yet, please don't complain here, just ignore this thread.

Fmr. Governor Sarah Palin of Alaska

Fmr. Governor Mike Huckabee of Arkansas

Fmr. Governor Mitt Romney of Massachusetts

Fmr. Speaker of the house Newt Gingrich of Georgia

Governor Tim Palwenty of Minnesota

Representative Ron Paul of Texas

Senator John Thune of South Dakota

Governor Haley Barbour of Mississippi

Governor Gary Johnson of New Mexico

I voted for Mitt Romney. He's intelligent, well-spoken, charming, but a bit of a neo-conservative, which isn't popular right now. He's also a successful businessman. He would probably be able to work across the aisle with Democrats.

Unfortunately, American politics is less and less about reaching towards the middle and more and more about rooting for individual sides, so I really doubt that Romney would win the GOP nomination.

Right now, Palin couldn't get elected governor of Alaska....

He is a bit out of touch with common folk, but I could vote for him. Depending on who the VP is....hopefully he would choose a VP that has a substantial military background.

Please provide me with a quote where he said it was a "bad idea." I'll be waiting.

I think he's a phoney.

How about Stanley A. McChrystal? Wouldn't that be an interesting pair?

wouldn't it be more appropriate for you to post a link proving he said Texas should secede?

Nevermind....

Perry has expressed bewilderment that his statements drew so much attention. And he did not, as some national media reports said, advocate secession. He did, however, assert Texas' right to leave the U.S., and he expressed sympathy for those so frustrated with the federal government's taxes, spending and mandates that they feel secession is an option.

"Texas is a unique place. When we came into the union in 1845, one of the issues was that we would be able to leave if we decided to do that"
He was stating a fact... not advocating it. Huge difference.

I can't say I'd definitely vote for him, but from what I know Rick Perry seems like a decent candidate to run for President. I like his views on Social Security and Health Care, and I like his opinion that states should have more power with making decisions in order to create more competition.

I did still vote for Perry, but this freaked me out a few a years ago. Not something a real conservative would do.

How so?
He did business school and law school at the same time, he has a first class brain. But, as I said, he is a bit out of touch with the common folk. The GOP kicked him in the teeth by promoting McCain, a man who is much more out of touch with common folk, not to mention reality. McCain was a few numbers short of graduating at the bottom of his class at the Naval Academy, not for lack of brains as much as lack of effort. Last thing we need in the WH is a slacker.

If he keeps going the way he is now, that's a distinct possibility.

And he certainly would be a role model in the fight against obesity.

Bobby J...South LA. in da house!

LOL...

Seriously though, between the oil spill and Bobby J's handling of LA. economy, he's the best counter to a President that prolonged the recession and botched the oil spill with red tape. Bobby J will have plenty of real life examples to contrast his philosophy to Obama's. If he picked NJ's Gov as a running mate, it would be a land slide...mostly because everyone would be scared to vote against him. Can you imagine Christie in a debate against Biden?

"Jindal, considered to be a rising star within the GOP despite some high profile setbacks, issued an emphatic Shermanesque statement Monday in an interview with the Associated Press when asked about his 2012 White House plans.

"I'm not being coy at all. I'm not running for president in 2012. Period. No ifs, ands or buts, no caveats," said Jindal. "We have made great progress in Louisiana, but we've got a lot more work to do.""

I would have put Jindal on the list, but he is NOT running in 2012. Look for him in 2016 maybe.

Other has almost as many votes as the rest of the list combined, and there's no one candidate eating up those numbers. This at least has the potential to be quite a fractured field. We'll see what happens.

I don't usually vote Republican, but if I did I would vote for Gary Johnson or Mitt Romney. Romney could be a winning ticket for Republicans but don't be surprised if they throw him away for a comedian like Sarah Palin.

Normally, if I don't like the GOP pick, I just don't vote for either. But if Palin runs, I WILL vote for Obama...

"I was elected yesterday," Obama said. "I have never set foot in the U.S. Senate. I've never worked in Washington. And the notion that somehow I'm immediately going to start running for higher office just doesn't make sense.

"So look, I can unequivocally say I will not be running for national office in four years, and my entire focus is making sure that I'm the best possible senator on behalf of the people of Illinois."

Newsvine - Four years ago: Obama "unequivocally" not running for president in 2008

Never say never.

I'd like to see Joe Biden run.

Actually, I supported McCain in '00 and '04. It was only after he moved further to the right and chose Palin as his VP pick that I stopped supporting him.

The problem with McCain's campaign, if you ask me, was that he had his own way of doing things, which would have worked, but kept getting advise from the GOP machine, which pulled him further Right. I think if McCain campaigned like he did in '00 and '04, but kept with it after he got the GOP nomination, he would have done a lot better.

I had a lot of respect for McCain before '08 because of his stances where he disagreed with the formal Republican Party, but now he seems to have just become more and more of a conservative schill. Which is really a damn shame.

That is why he had an option for "other". Who would you like to see run?

Being close to Trenton, I would say Christie could run and win. If there is one thing that Christie does that none of on these list do is that he backs up with what he says with similar action. Even Newt, who I think is one of the more intelligent Republicans, is just a mouth now.

He's another one along with Jindal, who says he's not running.

I gotta say, Christie has my respect when it comes to putting his money where his mouth is. Even so, I don't think he's ready for the Presidency yet.

Personally, I'd really prefer it if presidential candidates had some form of federal experience before attaining office. While a governorship is great for executive experience, it is rather limited because governors look out for only a state, and they have the benefit of line-item vetos.

Presidents, however, have to try to balance interests nationwide and really has to ride herd on Congress because of lack of the line-item veto power.

So maybe if Christie was appointed to some sort of federal executive position, although not a Cabinet position.
